Could you help me regarding an R170 window mechanism?

Hello all, me again, the frivolous one. Sadly, I've come across my first non-servicing problem with my dear little unusually coloured SLK. Her driver's door window tends not to go down first time of asking (fine second time at time of writing - so far). Went to visit my regular mechanic on both (elderly) cars this evening and he says time to price up a 'window mechanism with motor'. He actually said window something else but I've completely forgotten the other word. Now, I'm a lady of 59 now and I do love and look after my little car. Would there be at all a member near Preston who would help me source a new or second hand part for my little car? Obviously I do not do repairs myself, but my usual garage (Brook. Lane) is prepared to use second hand parts, but I feel I may not be taken seriously in a scrap yard. (My husband is disabled so I can't ask his help.) Most grateful for any comments whatsoever.

Oh dear, yes, window regulator, that was the word (sorry, but I've walked the dog, made a meal, eaten it, and all sorts since he told me, notwithstanding I repeated it 3 times. ) Will that firm be fair with an older lady enquiring?

They tend to be pretty good. Tell them you found them through here. Maybe mention that you will give them a favourable review should they help you. They will have a barter, so try and get some prices in your mind. Maybe eBay will have some clues.

I believe there may be two types depending on the age of the car so it would be wise to have the chassis no of the car to hand when telephoning- you will find it on the vin plate or on the cars registration document. It will start WDB170--------
Make sure you tell them its the drivers door and you want the mechanism+motor assembly --- assuming that's your problem and not the window winder switch?

Thank you both for helpful information, I'm obliged to you. I actually read your posts this morning on my laptop, but was working so not possible to reply. Certainly I'll get the car's vin number because I know there were changes within the R170 models. It's just so worrying because I've always told myself if she became expensive I would give her up, but I've become attached. I've seen this part on eBay for something under £60, can't really trust that and the motor mechanic who maintains her (and my other car and my Vespa) says I should get one with a motor, which presumably will be more expensive. Gulp! I had hoped to go on a few club drives before I had to give her up!

Don't give her up. Is your mechanic certain it is the regulator and not to switch or more common loom through the A Pillar chaffed?

Speak to Dronsfields. Have no fear of begging them for help. I bought a complete engine from them, with warranty that would have shamed eBay prices. Remember they have a car that is scrapped. All they want is their dosh with some profit back.

I apologise for the delay in my reply Bruce! I've been having problems with my password, emailed via "contact us" but no reply. In any event I think I have it sussed now. Your comment about the switch and/or chaffing of the wires gives me heart!

I think the chaffing issue may be valid as this morning (having received a present of a beautiful silk scarf from Beijing which perfectly matches the car) I wanted to travel with the top down, but it won't go, the light flashes, I've checked the boot cover, and to make matters worse I have have the ABS and BAS lights showing.:dk: I'm going to search on this forum to see if there's anything to give me ideas on the latter. Given the car is approaching 16 years old, I can't complain, really.

Sounds like something is bringing the whole 12v [nom] voltage supply bus down which would give rise lots of warnings going off. Time for an experienced old school vehicle electrician ti have a look methinks - It may be as simple as an intermittent short to earth or maybe an alternator problem.

Hi Lisa. Give Nick Webster a ring on 01625 879777 he is a very good Merc Specialist, very honest and the most helpful guy you could wish to meet.

Ex Merc diagnostic training guy with lots of good knowledge. May be a bit far from you but well worth the trip and he makes a good brew into the bargain.

I think grober and trickythemerc together probably have the right idea. I'll contact Mr. Webster with a view to having a run down there (Macclesfield I believe?).

Thanks all for your input.
