Found this crack today that certainly wasn't there when I used the car yesterday. It was about 2" long to start with and since using the car for a short journey I'd say the crack is now about 4" long running from the top of the screen across towards the drivers side window.:wallbash:

Anyone think I'll have trouble getting it replaced through my glass cover on my Hastings Direct insurance? I'll be calling them early tomorrow morning.I have a £65 glass excess.

Mine took a beating before I eventually gave in not long before the MOT late 15 I think it was - two cracks and 7 stone chips.

I am with Admiral but was replaced with the same make but without the MB badge I think (Solextra or something - I forget now).

No problem at all.

It's been many years since I claimed for a windscreen, but I don't see why it'd be an issue - this is why we have insurance, after all.

It will probably rack up the premium next year though, even if it doesn't affect your NCB - it'll go down as a claim, and you'll end up paying for it somehow..

Cheers,

Gaz

I had my windscreen replaced twice last year due to a crack then a bad stone chip, both times through my insurance with Saga so it was AA Windscreens that came and fitted, no increase in my insurance and excellent service from AA Windscreens both times. The fitter even pointed out that the screen had been previously replaced (first time he came) and that whoever fitted it had not installed the anti-squeek pads along the join between the screen and the dashboard - but he had suitable spares so fitted them!

I wish I could see a crack through my windscreen.

I have had two broken screens in a 210.
Autoglass replaced with Pilkington "Same Spec" screen on both occasions and there was distortion at the bottom of the screen.
Both same spec screens were begrudgingly replaced with a genuine MB screen when they acknowledged that the distortion was there.
If they will cough up for a genuine MB screen, that would be nice.

I've had screens replaced on a W211, a W212(pre-facelift) and twice on a W212 (post-facelift)
Each time by Autoglass via my insurer and never had an issue.
Although the wipers are now less sensitive when in auto ... not a big deal.
My premiums have stayed pretty constant.
Good luck.

Rang the windscreen claims number this morning and got an immediate answer. That's a first. Just needed Reg #, name, address, and contact number and payment of £65 excess which is not taken until the job is completed.

The guy asked if Monday was OK for a mobile fitter to call and I asked if he can recalibrate the rain sensor after fitting.
Err no we can't do that, so you have to take the car to the main dealer (or someone with Star) and have it done. Asked who will pay for that I'm told, send the bill to Hastings and they cover it. I'm not so sure.

Anyway, the job is being done Monday by Nationwide Motorglass who appear to have good reviews for their windscreen fitting. I'll take photos when he does it.

Hi
Roger I had my screen fit by Autoglass 2 month ago and everything works fine, no recalibration needed on mine, been on star since and nothing flashed up as needed doing...?
My fitter was class, really careful when removing , all taped up and coverered as not to damage or scratch owt .

Mine didn't need recalibrating either.

Just a straight swap out...

Had the new screen fitted without problems. I would certainly recommend National Mobile Windscreens and the fitter who did my work.
Called 45mins before turning up, then checked to ensure the correct screen had been supplied.
Pretty interesting watching him work, and remove trim I never knew came out.

New screen in, wipers reattached and trim refitted in around an hour. No wiper calibration required.
Nice to have a screen without those minute chips than annoy the hell out of you when the sun is low.

Edit .photobucket wants to rotate my photos!

Roger
Glad everything went ok and you had no issues ...Just out of curiosity could you post a pic of the glass stamp to compare with mine which was only fitted a couple of month ago...?
Cheers

Cheers Lee.

Here's a photo of the glass stamp. Its exactly the same as the one that was cracked. If its OEM it will have the 3 pointed MB star logo stamped into the screen, like your side windows have.

out of 7 years owning the 55, ive had autoglass out twice in just as many months to fix stonechips. they guarantee it wont spread otherwise the new screen is on them!

My excess used to be £60 now after 3/4 screens , the last one three years ago on an SLK its £90 , don't know what a screen would cost without cover, but I imagine £90 is quite cheap.

I was told a genuine Mercedes screen for my E Class with attention assist was about £1100. The non OEM replacement Autoglass used cost just over £500 according to the fitter.

And mine got a nice 3" circular crack again yesterday.

Normally the rain sensor needs to be calibrated with the new windscreen. There are various options in STAR for the windscreen, blue, green etc... However, if everything is working then happy days.

^ The fitter told me no recalibration was required afterwards.:dk:
So far he has been proven correct:bannana:

Incidentally, the E55 AMG is green although I can't see a tint.

I had very similar last year with my R129 .

Privilege had no issues and told me to book in with Auto Windscreens , which I was happy to do , but they had no screen in the UK and couldn't give me a timescale . With my MOT , at the time , 3 weeks away , this was going to be a problem . Privilege told me that , under the circumstances , to get quotes from any other supplier .

MB could supply a genuine screen from Germany within 48 hours , but not fit ; my local indy would fit the MB screen , from memory it was going to be about £1500 all in  I then found a small independent fitter , classic car specialist who came recommended by a local restorer I knew and trusted , who could supply and fit an aftermarket screen for something like £500 all in , and within a few days . I went with that option , paid my £75 excess and all was well .

The insurers , I think , are the least of the problem - it's more a matter of getting a good fitter .

No. My mrs is with Hastings, and when both our cars were recently trashed with bats and axes, every window in her car was done, and it cost her the £65 excess and there was no questions asked. So I think you'll be fine. :thumb:

I heard from an indie that when he worked for a franchised dealer that the mechanics were banned from taking out E63... as they used to compete, taking these cars out and leathering them to see if they could get the screen to crack...

Wasn't sure if this was just 'street rumour' or whether the body could really twist with some serious acceleration. I know your car isn't a 63, but with all the tuning - maybe it's even quicker?? Just a though - no expert btw
