Just had a wild idea - - just how good (or bad) are CLK500s (209)?...

I read somewhere that the CLK and CLS were designed by the same guy, an American called Michael Fink who also, oddly, designed the Maybach...

The 500 engine is very nice, but I can't say I have driven the CLK.

Stick to the CLS.

Seconded, CLS would be my choice, especially with that engine.

The guy who did the Veyron, his previous job was the VW Lupo/Seat Arouser...

My CLK500 is working well for me. CLS / CL etc are just too big for what I need.

Plenty of power and torque, fairly chuckable (for a merc)

I reckon I could do 30mpg if driven sensible (no intention of trying though)

Not given me any problems at all so far *touches wood*

if you do go the 500 route, try to get the 388hp new generation V8 instead of the old 306hp one

I'm just toying with different ideas, but the CLS is still looking good in my eyes - but I saw (and heard!) a viscious looking CLK500 today that made me stop and think...

I've not driven one, but I think they're a good looking motor. The 500 seems to be pretty good value as well, I guess people are scared off by the big V8. Personally, it's a plus point for me!

I saw a nice 02 plate one tonight as a matter of fact. It's a model I'm definitely considering for when I return to the fold (unless I win the lottery in the meantime and then it will be C63 all the way )

Hi Barry,

You are really getting the new car bug. The CLK500 is by no means a bad car, but a CLS is IMHO better and more luxurious.

Why not also consider a C55amg, possibly an estate.

Other ideas would be a 129, ditch the Saab and get a CLS55/500 E55amg(sell the 211 too) or C55amg estate/saloon and sell the 211 as well.
