Looking to replace the cream speaker cloth on the doors of my R129.

Before i take a chance on eBay generic speaker cloth, does anyone know of a source for the original stuff?

Thanks

the speaker grills are no longer available... I'm running with black lower grills on my grey interior whilst i source the cloth... the car is going to a trimmers soon to have the plastic windows renewed - am gonna ask them.. Though the problem of colour match is a worry for me as the try leather is a bit yellowy now - not sure how to fix it bar replacing the whole interior... hmm.. retrim in berry red?

The existing stuff has 12 years worth of dirt, and there is a waterstain on the tweeter cover. The glue that holds the fabric on has also given up, but a DIY reupholster would be easy if i could find the cloth...

Might take a punt on this stuff.

I bought some material for my home speakers here - Speaker Grille CLoth

They had a big colour range (actually sent me a card with a small bit of each which I've lost or I would have sent it on to you) - It's a stretchy material so easy to work with

edit - checked your ebay link - it's the same people!

Just off the phone to them - their "magnolia" colour looks pretty close to the original so I have ordered a 1x1.4m piece.

Will update the thread once I have it sorted for future reference.

What a very useful post, thank you.:thumb:

Just to round this off in case anyone finds this in the search...

Finally got round to doing this yesterday. The first lot of fabric i got from auto acoustics was miles off on colour so exchanged it for the "almond" colour. It is a bit less buttery and more white than the original, but is still a very good match for the carpets etc in the car.

The 1m x 1.4m piece is probably enough to do 8 doors. It was easy to work with and a bit of adhesive and spray glue did the job. Dismantling the doors was also very straight forward but I think they had been apart before.

Very nice indeed.

Do you need to take the entire door cards off to do this or can you get the speaker grills out separately?

You have to remove the entire door card to get at the smaller cover. The bottom one comes off with doorcard attached. That was fairly simple. The plastic grilles that the fabric is attached to are fitted into the composite doorcard material with what look like melted fixings. Most of them came out unscathed but a couple snapped and I had to repair with glue. Pretty poor manufacture method, as it is not demountable.

If they last another 12 years its not too much trouble. It took me less than 2 hours start to finish including upholstering time and driving about Marylebone and up to Edgeware Road to find a shop open on a Sunday that stocked spray adhesive.

I had the same issue, my speaker cover material was filthy from 20 years of people getting in and out catching it with there shoes. I changed the drivers side today, passengers will be done tomorrow. Simple to do and relaxing job. The photos don’t do the material colour justice as it looks darker than it is. In reality it’s far closer to the door card colour itself.
