Cruise control

My cruise control seems very temperamental, it works one day every time you set it, then the next day it'll work but then drop off while driving & not work for the rest of the day.
I've changed the brake light switch as it seemed to be on its way out as when you kept your foot on it, the lights would flicker which has now stopped & thought the two might've been connected.....but NO wallbash:

Is your car still on the original battery?

I ask because my old W202's cruise control became very temperamental shortly before the battery needed replacing. It was fine after I fitted a new one.
