Hi all,
Had to remove the engine cover today as I was looking to see if I had a coolant leak anywhere (mysteriously loosing coolant for the last few months)
As I was inspecting everything , just looking, no touching I noticed one of the cables going into the ECU (left connection point) has a huge gouge on it and the wires are connected by threads ! How much financial **** am I in?

I can only guess this happened at some point during a. Service, the cover may have been smacked on catching the wire?

I'll leave this to the experts, who will be along soon. Lucky you spotted it when you did at least you were not left stranded with and even bigger bill.

Good Luck.

One two wires needing repaired so no big drama.

Remove the plastic outer sleeve and just splice a new piece of wire in , a bit of solder and some heatshrink and all will be well again.

Dare I ask , because I know nothing about cars (I struggled to top up the coolant) how much would I potentially be looking at to get replaced in MB, is that one of the long looks or a short one?

That is one big cut in that cable, the repair will need you to cut the outer cable over and then separate the individual cables which has to be the most delicate part of the operation,I would get all the things you need before you start, other posters have covered them, either that or get a mobile electrician around and he should be able to effect a good repair, what puzzles me is just what caused this.

If you look at the proximity to the engine cover clip, is say the engine cover coming down did it, if someone was trying to force it into place

If you dont feel confident tackling the job yourself then any decent auto spark or indy garage, if you prefer, could do it in > 30min. Any longer than that and they aint a decent spark.

If your car has a FMBSH then try calling Mobilo as i am sure they could carry -out the repair without any issue.

Just say you were topping up the washer fluid , or checking the oil when you noticed it and dont want to chance driving incase it breaks down.

I suspect an MB dealer will want to replace the entire wiring harness so don't take the car there! Find an independent specialist or an auto electrician as has already been said.

It's fully MB serviced so I have the mobilio cover, would they do that kind of repair?

If they are the only ones that have been working on the car then it is worth a call especially if you can show them what has caused the damage.

Play dumb and explain you dont want to drive the car incase it breaks down.

I had a CEL that came on and wouldnt reset , i called Mobilo and they came to my work and had a nosey around under the bonnet before they plugged in the STAR diagnostic machine , they found part of the "extra" wiring for the Brabus box had chaffed through under the engine cover so they repaired that prior to running the diag. check which found a faulty inlet pressure sensor. They told me it was safe to drive and to drop it of at the supplying dealer where a courtesy car would be waiting for me.

That's a definite cut - not burnt from heat etc.

Auto electrician will sort it easily. MB will deny it anyway, and as said earlier are likely to diagnose a harness replacement!

Kenny N is on the ball here.. its an easy enough repair. just a little patience is required and make sure you have all the tools to do the job. One final suggestion is to use self amalgamating tape to seal the repair when finished.. it will protect it and its water proof.. It will be expensive for the loom trust me.. I'll be surprised if its cheap as VW wanted £5k for an engine loom all for a 6" repair..an alternative is to look for a secondhand loom from a breakers, it will be a lot cheaper in the long run...

MB Mobilo en-route as we speak!

It is worth a try , if it gets repaired then it is a result but if they get funny then you have always got the fall back of a relatively cheap repair by using an auto spark.

Easy repair.
That's not damage from a cover being forced in place, that's a blade cut.
I could repair that wiring in about 30 minutes.

:)

Hey everyone, Just an update for you all.
So the mobilo guy came out last night (Awesome service) and there was nothing he could do there and then other than assure me it was not critical systems that were affected , and offered me a tow to the dealer, I declined and said I would drive in today. He was great, when he asked why I was looking in the engine I told him about the car DRINKING coolant, he very quickly pointed out the location of the water pump and all of the old spilled green coolant stains on it!!, That's to that I was able to being it to my dealer this morning and they have committed to fix it all (Water pump and loom damage)
There is a lot to be said for keeping up the dealer history and servicing!

Also, when I was googling 2010 E200 CDI Engine bay I came across this image on google, Zoom in to the loom location in front of the ECU and you will see a similar cut / pinch to mine, Could this be a more common issue?

This image is not my car, just a random google image search!

There may have been a factory recall/authorised repair on the early waterpumps on these OM651 engines? Here's a "how to" on an OM651 [same engine] in a C class W204. looks a bit of a swine?

So that's very interesting, I have been suffering from an engine squeak on initial start-up when cold, could that have been the water pump?
