DAB 'Device Unavailable' Message

Had MB's latest software Comand update in July at MB Tonbridge all DAB issues seemed to have been resolved thankfully.

Regards

Richard

I've had the update 2 months now and virtually every time I start the car when I'm at or near home (Gu21) it comes up with 'Device Unavailable'. About 2 minutes later it returns with the channels. I'm now wondering if it's a hardware issue and the device cannot actually remember more than 100 channels in its Flash ram.

Im in the same postcode and what you are seeing is quite normal.

The DAB controller takes a little longer to start up that the audio unit. I get the same on my A class each morning and ive seen it elsewhere. The firmware issues that were causing the problems meant the device becoming unavailable at various times whilst the car is in use. Your issue is not the same.

I ventured in to the DAB triangle near Guilford yesterday and found a new problem, all the BBC national stations vanishing for a period, then reappearing by the M25 Staines junction.

i got this a few times today, around wrotham / meopham in kent - it ocurred around 3 times in as many minutes.

Is the fix a recall now, as my warranty expired in March 15?

Thanks

I can only confirm again and travelling in the Surrey and Kent area frequently ( I live in the Purley area) that after the most recent upgrade I get no problems at all.

You should report this. This is caused because when the DAB tuner sends >100 stations (now it is fixed) the COMAND head unit ignores anything over 100, and sometimes in fact chops the list really short (down to about 50)

- I know this because I put a MOST analyser on the fibre optic network :-)

I can't report it because I don't have a car with factory DAB :-)

Cheers

Richard

I'll have words with stealer but the car is out of warranty, so I'm not sure how interested they'll be now,

The Surrey Hotspot

Fascinating, I had this issue for first time yesterday and assumed it was the usual in / out of reception for DAB we have here in rural Bucks (at home we get, subject weather, 5 - 7 channels at best!).

It happened to me as I was travelling down, and then back up the M25 past Egham last night, and seemed to continue until I got just north of the M4 junction.

I hadn't seen the error message before however and thought no more of it until I popped on the forum and stumbled across this thread :thumb:

The E250 goes back to MB next week, so no upgrade for me, but I hope the new one will have this resolved - that said, round home it isn't going to be an issue for a while

I'm currently sat with a cuppa while the Guys at Command update the Firmware on my R172. Will let you know if it solves the problems...

Update: The new Firmware certainly seems to have done the trick! No dropouts on the drive back from Lightwater [emoji106]

What IS still happening is the Audio 20 displaying "No Reception", when the DAB audio is still absolutely fine. Weird, but purely cosmetic, so I'm happy.

According to the Guys at Command, the issue occurred when the unit received >100 DAB stations, and got into a tailspin. Well worth the update...

Had the dab update done on my w204 c class at no charge whilst my car was being serviced at a main dealer and it has rectified the problem.

Had the same in me e class coupe got a new antenna and amplifier and it is now as it should be,got it done under warranty, got the usual we are in Scotland and the signal is not great? Well I had a kadjer for a few days at work and never lost a signal once, tell them to get it fixed its a Merc for gods sake

Have similar problem on my 2013 B Class, intermittent device unavailable .
Took it in the other week to get checked and was told i`d have to pay £70 for the firmware upgrade because it was out of warranty (by 3 months). I agreed as i wanted it fixed but then thought why everything else in my house gets free firmware upgrades but my car is costing me £70? Turns out they need a good few hours to get it working , as it wasnt successful in the hour I left it with them so they asked me to book it in for a full day.
I left to go home with a "device unavailable" permanently on the dab screen, at least before it was only occuring everything 5mins or so.
Anyway have complained to Mercedes customer services to see if they can come up to a better (and cheaper) solution .

Sounds like the numpty who was doing it, didn't know how to do firmware updates and/or replace the antenna. There is still a problem with comand getting confused if you drive into an area which has more than 100 DAB stations, which causes stations to disappear for a period.

W205. I get the odd drop out but just changing to the next station (either up or down) brings it back. However I do have a strange issue which is when starting the car with the radio switched on I get the first few words repeated - just once and only after an full switch off. Doesn't really bother me but odd!

Had mine sorted, there was a bad connection on the dab interface. They updated the firmware as well all free of charge. So im a happy Mercedes customer again now.

Get the firmware updated. This fixes it.

It fixes the 'device unavailable' messages and improves reception no end, but Comand still doesn't know what to do when the tuner passes more than one hundred stations to it. You then start losing stations (typically BBC national ones).
Luckily this only seems to happen in the Guildford DAB triangle.

Richard can tell you the gory details.

If you run Autotune/Autostore the stations should come back.
