Hi folks.

So I'm seriously considering getting rid of the merc and getting one of these instead!! My wife refuses to drive the merc as it's too big, too fast and too fancy! I commute in a wee Renault Zoe so we need something else.

Requirements have to be

  • an estate (Dogs / Buggies etc.)
  • capable of towing a small trailer / trailer tent.
  • Roof rails (Nice but not essential - i use a roofbar a lot for windsurfing / bikes / roofbox)
  • Cheap
  • Reliable
This seems to fit the bill. She's wanting something nearly new, and my local dealer (who I also got my renault through) has an ex-demo at a reasonable price. It's the 1/5 diesel, with a few gadgets (druise control, central locking, electric windows, AC) so fits the bill nicely

We are taking it for a couple of days test drive this week, I'll report back. From what I've read they are cheap, basic, reliable and pretty good all round no-frills motoring. Does anyone have any direct experience with them? I'd be interested in your thoughts! Quite a change from an S211, but times change!!

humm, Dacia logan or Mercedes E-class??? Really??? lol :( Probably made from recycled cornflakes lol

The Dacia appear just as rust prone as the early 211s so you should feel right at home!

My wife also reacted to the E class estate by saying it's too big - but she's perfectly happy with our S204 C220 Elegance. It's an estate, has roof rails, mine has the factory fit fold away tow hitch (can't be retrofitted though!), reliable and so far has been cheap to run.

To this day ive never seen a rusty 211? do they rust quicker than the 210's? perhaps thats why i haven't lol.

Id rather own a rusty Mb than half a renualt.

My dad had a similar issue with his w116 S-class, Mum wanted a new car and at the time the Proton 1.5mpi had just came out.

They took one for a drive but then once they got back into the Mercedes they thought better of it.

Before the mid-life facelift, yes.

Arches, bootlids mostly, but nowhere near as bad as 210s.

mine must be the exception to the rule then on a november 53 build ;)

It's very variable - mine was a year newer yet still had to have arches and bootlid done under warranty.

My little girls mum has a Dacia Duster and it's been very good!

It's effectively made of Renault/Nissan parts from the last ten years so tried and tested parts. Plus they've made some very clever cost cuttings such as the doors are identical across the range etc so it's not necessarily the build quality that's been cut!

The only criticism of the car has been the paint, chipped more easily than she'd like and has shown rust come through where a bolt is painted over. Hence they're looking at it under warranty.

Blimey, glad i took all the liner's out and clean behind them all then, strange isn't it you would have thought they had learnt from the 210's:thumb:

So back to the OP's question then......

A friend of our family bought a new Dacia Duster and does a fair amount of miles as she is a mobile hairdresser. Very pleased with the car and not overly bothered about all the extras she doesn't have. Her view is that it is warranted for 3 years and at the end of that period she will part ex it for a similar new model.

And it will be worth 50p and a curly wurly.

The Dacia's are pretty robust, not as robust as new MB but I'm sure as robust as a 10 year old MB with 100k on - that's the difference. It's an estate car for the price of a good holiday for a family of four, treat yourself Timster if you fancy it.

As an aside I had a pretty scary ride with a Brasov (Romania) cab driver with a broken arm and a 300,000km in 2011, but he loved his Logan saloon!

A car that is younger (by several decades) than a W124 that doesn't need to be hooked to a £100+/hr computer to empty an ashtray. I can't see its secondhand value plummeting quite as predicted.

Remember also those Skoda jokes that were unfounded.
It may not be as nice to drive as a premium brand but no doubt considerably cheaper.
I don't fancy one but I can see the attraction.

My wife's best friend in Germany bought a Sandera 5 years ago and has had no problems. As a purely financially based purchase it's proven to be a very good car ( there's only so much money you can loose on one of these after all). It is well put together with sensibly chosen 'luxury' bits. The interior is hard wearing and plenty of space including the boot. I'm sure you could do a lot worse particularly when an older luxury vehicle requires an expensive replacement part. I like my Mercedes very much but don't believe it to be more reliable than other cars I have owned .
