My wife's car failed its (free from Audi) MOT today for "cut in excess of the requirements deep enough to reach the ply or coed (4.1.c.1a)
The nick goes not look to bad to me but would like to know if any one knows how deep before a fail. I will get a second opinion tomorrow.

If it's failed the MOT, then why risk a blowout at speed? Play safe and get a new one.

I second that. If there's a tear in the sidewall I would replace it.
A lot of heat is generated at 70mph, a blow out is the last thing you'll need.

Here's some info on the MoT tyre test.

I guess it's "in the tester's opinion" rather than there being specifications.

But I'm with the others ... any sidewall damage apart from a light cosmetic scuff = new tyre.

Tyre = primary safety component. Not worth taking any risks at all.

A clearer photo would show more but that looks like just the rim protector has been sliced off and as such shouldn't be a fail on its own.

What is it with women and kerbs..??:crazy:

Sorry I new about that nick and took it for granted that that was it, Silly me. Looking at it in daylight the tester had (quite rightly) marked a circle in yellow about 10 inches past that one. Sure enough she has kerbed the wheel twice more once cutting the side wall. Thats three on one wheel and a total of nine marks on all four wheels in three months since Amazing Alloys refurbished them. Its time to get one new tyre and six driving lessons from BSM for Madam!

Women = negitive

Kerb = Positive

They can't help it :)

tyre shopper shows a barum tyre with the exact same spec fully fitted for £98 or an avon for £134
