Dartford crossing toll booths end on Sunday

To make it worse, I believe the French are managing the charging system for us.

Because there will be no scanner to read the remote receiver..... It reads number plates. Having said that the next question is why can't you register your car with your sanef account.....

Yes exactly, all it needed was the same scanner system they use all over France, not as if they have no experience of it!

Er, yes :o

Have you seen the queues heading back to Paris on a Sunday? That was exactly what they already had....

This will eliminate any slowing down at all... It really is seamless.

Ok. I am an existing Dart Tag account holder with £ credit on my account.

I have now (two weeks ago) opened a Dart Charge account.

When I log into the Dart Charge account it shows a zero credit balance. I called them and was told it will all just transfer on the 30th November. Here's hoping.

I believe it is a French company that owns the rights to manage the crossing. There was talk of cancelling the tunnel charge (pre-bridge days) as fees had paid for them. Then the fees were continued to fund the bridge. That has been paid for I believe and the toll continues to fund the tunnel replacement, apparently.

There is a consultation ongoing for the route of the next crossing; lots of homes up for sale in South Essex along the proposed routes, especially the 'nicer' parts where properties are larger and have larger plots. As is their want, the politicians are causing unnecessary heartache and worry in these parts………….my message to them would be, Just put it next to the existing bridge and stop mucking about, you stupid twonks!

PS. I am am/was a Dart-Tag customer who has transferred (to Dart-Charge?) but on the local residents scheme so I pay no more than 20p a crossing (50 crossings for my £10). I can upgrade to £20 and get unlimited crossings. It is their way of saying thank you and sorry for the traffic when there are problems at the crossing of which there are many.

Yup I got an email tonight confirming my account. But it shows a zero balance. My tag account shows a balance of £40 which is correct.

Hardley any queues when you use the tagged lanes, the long queues are the dopey g&ts who are too tight to bother getting the auto tags, mainly foreigners! :D

Usually you can actually drive through the auto lanes at about 15-20kph without stopping, although it takes guts to have faith in the barrier raising fast enough

You've been in different queues to me. it's taken me 30 minutes to get to the point where you can get to the tag lane

The Dartford crossing was heavily criticised by environmentalists who pointed out that Dartford had the worst air quality from anywhere on the M25.

I suspect that had the toll booths not been replaced with an automated payment system, it would have been very difficult for the authorities to keep them at all given the massive pollution they were causing.

David

I think the issue is the bottleneck caused by 4 lanes of Motorway opening out to xx toll booths. Any queue is pushed back into the 4 lanes almost immediately.

This is so ironic since the governments argument for keeping the toll booths was to reduce/control traffic and hence reduce pollution.

Well at Midnight on Saturday (no I didn't sit up and wait) my Dart Tag balance transferred to my new Dart Charge account. So that bit worked.

All my registrations that I entered appear on the account. All I have to do is try the actual crossing and hope that it is indeed seamless.

I live on the Isle of Wight, thus subject to the whims of Red Funnel or Wightlink ferries
The same principle applies to ferry tickets..buy online in advance and it is about £42 return. Buy on the spot and it is much more. When I bought my current Merc in Portsmouth and went to the ferry for a one way ticket to the Island, it was £90!!! For a four mile crossing!! "Market forces", said the clerk.
No choice but to pay.
