The Polarstern icebreaker. This is the ship that's going to get itself stuck in the Artic Ice while it drifts across the North Pole. Will take around a year to complete the transit. Ice-locked ship to drift over North Pole - BBC News
Its not the first attempt----- intrepid Norwegian explorer Fridtjof Nansen attempted the same feat in the Fram during 1893-96 It took 3 years!

That wooden ship intended to get such for 3 years in the ice? I'm guessing no one stayed on board for the full term. Must be like watching the proverbial (white) paying dry

The Fram is still around in a museum named after it in OSLO. To my mind these guys, in their day , were the equivalents of Astronauts
