Hi All
thought this may be of use as a lot are being sold on ebay and they are very expensive to buy from Mercedes. Quote from ebay

We have noticed a number of Mercedes-Benz keys being sold here on ebay, they are black (latest have chrome on each side) with either 2 or 3 buttons and are known as DAS3 by Mercedes-Benz.
The two on the left of the picture.

To clarify these keys cannot be re-coded in order for them to work on a different vehicle, not even by a Mercedes-Benz dealer. This is a vehicle security feature, so to buy a used one is a not a good idea.
Infra-red Flip keys (The metal blade flips out far right in picture) which are used on certain C class MLs SLKs and A class amongst others, cannot be re-coded in order for them to work on a different vehicle. However, if this type of key isn't used for an extended period, or if the key batteries go flat they too "forget" (a vehicle security feature) the unlocking code for the vehicle they were coded to. These keys can be taught to re-learn the original code as long as the key isn't faulty.
This procedure can be found in the relevant owners manual and takes just moments to complete or just pop in and see us and we can do it for you.
Its best with all Mercedes-Benz remote locking keys to rotate there use every so often, and if you haven't got a spare we strongly suggest you invest in one as it saves time and money if you loose the only key you have.
Hope this helps!

"Smart" key. Well, it sure smarts when you have to buy one. Pretty smart to charge ten prices for possibly the most crucial bit in the whole kit, I suppose.

Gee, my Datsun 510 sure was a wonderful car.....

Very good to replace the battered casing of a well used key. I did this to mine and it cost me £9 I think. Now my key is like new :)

Are they easy to get open Steve ?

I was thinking about this myself as mine is pretty bashed up ...

Howard.
Yours is the same as the second link. Dead easy.

Thanks Hi-lo. I looked but couldn't find that.

Thanks guys .

Much appreciated , is there an actual picture, where you stick the knife in to open the case ?

To open the battery door use the metal blade tip, then small pliers or a knife to operate the clip on the internal locking brace.

It's easy when you look, but note which way round the brace goes.

I'm sure once i get hold of a new key , i'll be posting up again with my stupid questions ....

I have had a couple of faulty keys where the coil on the end which self-powers the thing has been damaged - apparently from water ingress through the window on the end - which can, if you are very neat with a soldering iron, be replaced with one from an eBay key. Not for the faint-hearted - it is a tiny component.

Usually it is just the soldering but if the component really is damaged, then the eBay key should be a reasonable spare part option.

So are you saying if i bought a w202 IF flip blade key on ebay, i can teach it to read the code for me car or speak to my car. Have one set of keys and need a spare

"cannot be re-coded in order for them to work on a different vehicle".

"These keys can be taught to re-learn the original code as long as the key isn't faulty". (For the vehicle it was originally supplied for)!

:wallbash:

Das3 keys can be recoded to work on any compatible car by these guys Mercedes key specialists- Need new Mercedes keys? Replacementmercedeskeys.co.uk but its really only useful in an emergency situation where your key is dead/lost as the cost to visit your car and recode is just a shade cheaper than buying a new key from MB.

I can't see anything in their bumph about reprogramming a key from another vehicle. Have I missed it? :dk:

read some of the testimonials
anyone used replacementmercedeskeys.co.uk?

I sent him a totally dead key, old black plastic version. It had taken a trip in the washer and tumble dryer. As it could not be fixed, he took the codes off and wrote them to a new (new to me, was off ebay) chrome style key for me.

Excellent testimonials, but not one of them mentions sending him a key off fleabay. Do you think that maybe he supplied you with a new key, or fixed your old inners and transferred them to the new case?

the board is completely different, I suppose its possible he did remove the coded chip and replace that onto a used key?
But he does say he can produce a new key for a car, as these fobs will not be sold anywhere as virgin blanks, he must have a way to write to them.
