hi just wanted to see if anybody had changed dash bulbs . the amg badge in the center of mine is very dim.
also the bulbs behind the heater switch and head lamp switch has gone out.

Are all of your lamps either dim or out ?

I'm wondering if it is the rheostat (dimmer) ?

The bulb is out on the headlight switch , the bulb is very dim on the amg badge on dash , the heater direction control bulb is out, but the powerlevel switch is fine im guessing its age and maybe bad connections but still its very annoying to say the least.
I dont suppose you know if the center consol window switches are changeable , or are they on a loop wired in to a board

Ive done the bulbs behind the the instrument cluster.

If you have a telescopic steering column the cluster can come out without removing the steering wheel.

You need to cut down a coat hanger in two and make up two tools with a 5mm long right angle bend at one end.

You then slide these into each side of the cluster at the point where the controls are for the clock and odometer, turn them so they hook behind the cluster and then coax it out. It is held in purely by friction. Note that if you are too brutal you can easily damage the cluster !!! It can be quite tight and it helps to also coax it out from behind at the same time. This is done by dropping the lower panel and putting your hand behind the cluster.

EPS is useless for identifying the correct bulb that you need so you need to identify the faulty bulb before buying a replacement as there are several types with different wattages.

You can buy the bulbs cheaper here than MB (Once you have identified the ones you need):

was it a pain!! just want to check before i start.
any words of advice??

Here is a link on how to do it:

202Tech Instrument Cluster Removal

Regarding it being a pain, its not difficult, but it can be a bit fiddly, especially if the cluster has never been removed. It is held in purely by friction and can be quite tight to come out.

I had to coax it out from behind as well as pulling it out from the front with my coat hanger hooks......if you are not careful and too brutal, it is very easy to break the front of the cluster.

Once it starts to move, it comes out easily. Bit fiddly to get it past the steering wheel.

The part that is a pain is the fact that you have to take the cluster out before you can identify the bulb that you need. There is no way MB can identify it unless you remove the bulb and take it in...there are too many variants in the several different clusters that were used. This means that you have to take the cluster out, and pop out the bulb first, so you can't finish the job there and then.

Hi Desilva. can you give me a link to replacing bulb on the fan control unit. as the light have gone on the fan position dial (the one that you twist to set position to feet, windscreen etc etc)

thanks

Shala
