Dash cam questions (lots of them)

Or save your pennies on the hardwire kit and just buy a female lighter socket and wire it via an inline fuse to 12v. Simples

Have the 512g myself and bought a £3 stick on mount instead of the sucker mount.
Also had it hard wired with no issues.

Thanks all. MBClub never fails to be an awesome source of help and advice :)

I like the look of the Blackview, especially with rear camera but struggling to convince wifey on the price. However, the Nextbase looks more palatable.

I think I'll pop into Halfords at some point and look at the 512G.

Any one have experience with the effect of hard wiring one on lease or warranty? Do I need to worry about that?

Just to throw another manufacturer in the mix, I used to run an old Roadhawk non HD, but recently upgraded to the Garmin HD. Was after a recognised brand after first buying one of the cheap Chinese ones, and it died in 2 weeks.

JimboDS - Halfords will also wire the camera in for around £30. In my opinion, there shouldn't be a problem with warranty etc as you are not altering any standard equipment on the vehicle, just adding a recognised accessory.

No they won't.

Yes, I found that the aftermarket mounts can take up much less room (camera doesn't hang down so low on the screen) and make the camera less obtrusive. My 512g mount came very low on my w204 windscreen as it's quite a shallow screen and I emailed Next base and moaned about it. They were extremely helpful and sent me another mount the next day! I have since found out that this mount comes from the Nextbase 202 lite camera and done the job nicely as the camera is now much higher. I looked on the NB web site to see if I could purchase another and it shows an "out of stock" notice. However like yourself, I looked around and found several cheap mounts available on Amazon, so I now have spares.:thumb:

Perhaps means they won't install anything unless it was purchased from them. I know this to be true.

Incedently... I first made the mistake of placing the camera on the drivers side and in front of the rear view mirror. First off, it is very tight for space and secondly there is a sensor in the back of the mirror and placing the camera in front of it shielded daylight to the sensor and put both my mirrors (internal and driver side) into constant "anti glare" (very dark) mode which is a pain in daylight. I have now moved it onto the passenger side and all's well again.
Just saying... Doh:doh:

Maybe you know something I don't V8 Animal. If so please share the info because Halfords are displaying this info on their website.
Nextbase Dash Cam 402G Professional
Try them yourself.
I bought the camera from them and for £30 thought it was worth the cost.
Gave them the details of my car etc and booked the car in.
Turned up at appointment time installer came across sorry sir this car is way out of our league due to the complex electrics he said.
Rather annoyed took my business elsewhere £80 lighter and sorted.
No idea if what he was saying was true or not but he refused to work on my car.
Wyvern shopping centre Derby.
Ok

Hmmm.. seems like Halfords need to give a little more staff training before they offer such services. Thanks for your response V8 Animal, lets hope it helps other folk.

Anyone have experience of the Road Angel Halo?

For anyone interested, I had the Road Angel Halo fitted to the wife's car this morning.

Obviously early days but so far I'm impressed.

Why do many members distrust things built in China.
Just 2 examples. iPhones are built in China and they work. Maplins buy lots of stuff from China and you would probably buy from them.
IF IT AINT MADE IN CHINA ITS A FAKE

Good news, glad you got sorted. Any update would be great i.e. would you recommend etc. Thanks JimboDS. :thumb:

Hey Dizzy,

Based on experiences so far yes I would.

Video quality is pretty good. I'm glad we got a rear camera too. Videos are saved as 1 minute AVI files so easy to share. I haven't worked out how you export rear video, map or g-force but it must be possible - worst case I guess you could send the insurance company the Road Angel software and memory card.

It came with a 16 GB memory card which I've upgraded to 32 GB, mainly so that it keeps more video when parked up all day. From what I remember, with 16 GB it was holding about 2 or 3 hours driving, an hour parking and the separate partition for "events" had loads of space left.

I only have two minor reservations:
1) It is a tiny bit noisy. By that I mean it beeps when it detects an "event" (G-forces over certain threshold so it thinks it could be a crash). That goes off sometimes over some of the more bumpy B roads around my way. I think I've turned off the beep now but only my wife has driven the car since so I haven't confirmed it worked.
2) In parking mode a blue LED lights up on the front of the camera. It's REALLY bright. On the one had I like it because if someone bumps the car I expect they'd notice the light and camera and that would encourage them to own up - easier than me having to approach them. But I think I'd rather it were more discrete. I could always stick some tape over the LED if I decide I'm that bothered!

Overall I'd recommend it. I have no regret saving £100+ over the Blackvue as it does pretty much everything the Blackvue seems to. Will see how it goes over the next few months but when I change my car later in the year I expect I'll get one fitted in that too.

EDIT: Anyone local to Swindon, I'd recommend these guys www.autoelectrix.co.uk. The fitted it for me. Tidy job and good service.
