    Hey all.

I am a new member and just purchased my first ever German car a Mercedes c class 2017 amg. Stunning car.

I wonder if anybody has successfully installed (hardwire) a dash cam on their car and if so how they did it? What camera?

Halfords seem to offer a hardwire dashcam service but am unsure if they would know how to tap in to the fuse box on such a new Mercedes?

Would love to hear other members experiences in this

    Best wishes

I would get Mercedes to fit the camera. Otherwise you risk invalidating the warranty.

I have front and rear dashcams which are not hardwired in.

Front cam is plugged into the front 12V under the flap.
Rear cam is plugged into one of the central arm rest USB socket.

    Hi

    Thanks for your reply.

Does it auto come on when engine turns on? Which camera? Did you install it yourself?

If it were me, I'd find a local specialist or get Mercedes to fit it. Dont think I'd be going to Halfords with my new Mercedes.

I've had dashcams for longer than most. Had an insurance case settled, no fault, within 24 hours when I submitted video recording.

The current one is a £80 unit bought off e-Bay, front and rearward facing cameras in my SLK 55. easy enough to route wiring behind windscreen top trim, A pillar and through to aux 12v connector in footwell where it is permanently wired in.

Comes on automatically when the power is turned on, fit and forget. Just occasionally erase the SD card to make sure there's plenty of room for locked files ( the unit locks a file everytime there is a bump or sudden movement )

I have fitted units to my company vehicle, wifes car, and both kids.

Invalidate warranty .... I hardly think so.

Halfords .......... not in my lifetime!

I meant that tampering with the the battery by a third party might invalidate the warranty - not the dash cam itself.

I had a Nextbase Dual (front & rear single camera) installed perfectly, neatly and without fuss by Halfords. Took them about 30 minutes to fit and set up. Evidence quality and night vision.

Was this on a newish Mercedes? Seems to be differing opinions whether to trust a merc with Halfords?

I've fitted a DDPai Mini2 cam to my C204. I tapped the wire going to the ciggie lighter and then ran it behind the dash over the glovebox to a trailing 12v socket.

This contains an Anker dual USB adaptor with a feed running up the A pillar to the dashcam and another running back to the centre of the dash for my phone mount.

It all works pretty well but the dashcam seems to reduce the DAB radio sensitivity.

Why not use an auto electrician? After all, that's their job.

The front 12V supplies power when the ignition is on - same as for car radio etc

The USB power is supplied as soon as the car is unlocked, and stops power when the car is locked.

Just the way the power behaves from these sockets

As you are plugging into the sockets it isn't much of an 'installation' just routing the cabling under the trim. Cables just push under the window trim, so the cables are mainly invisible. No drilling or ripping up trim.

It was on a new BMW X5. I would have no concerns with a new Merc. Why? Well Halfords are probably the largest re-seller and installer of these camera's in the UK.

They are taking a feed from the fuse using a fuse adapter (that is what is now standard practice) then routing the wire to legal position for the camera. The chap who did mine was on his seventh install that week (it was a Tuesday) he was happy for me to watch. He had all the correct tools for trim removal and fuse probing. He also gave me several options on when power was applied to the camera. All for £30.

Wouldn't let Halfords monkeys anywhere near any of my cars... be a £10 car or £100k car

Can't help think that Halfords will be very variable. Suspect most would be ok, but you might get unlucky. Not sure what the dangers are - maybe causing cosmetic damage to the interior? If so, how easy would it be to get them to pay for fixing of that?

Easier than it would be trying to get MB to pay up going by some of the horror stories we read on this very forum where most advocate "do not take your car to MB"

This is true, I've got first hand experience of this with my dealer.

I just used the 12v socket in glovebox, routed via pillar, you just push cable thru the trim, at least on my W212, there was no trim to remove etc so fairly easy job. Think you only need someone to do it if you require it to be always on.

So small update. I phoned one halfords branch and they said that mercedes c class is one of the few cars that they cannot do. I then phoned another branch and the guy told me he can do ANY car.

Overall not very confident due to differing advice and some of the strong words opposing the use of halfords in this thread.

I have decided to go for a professional auto electrician as was advised by one of the posts and will update you with pics once it's done.

There is not a lot out there on the internet regarding dash cams and mercedes benz so hope others will find this thread useful.
