Hi Guys...This is the 1st time I've had a bit of a glitch with Esplanade Isle of Wight....I had an A7 service and MOT today...all ok except they have left me with this message every time I start the car:

It says : Service B overdue by 5100 ml

They recon the car needs a software update at a cost of £109.80...

I have been on google and there are lots of u tube video's on resetting the service indicator...but I thought I'd check with you guys 1st

Thanks Eddie

Try the youtube method, if it doesn't work (it worked for me on two occasions) pay the fee.

If Esplanade Isle of Wight is a MB dealer, take it back and ask them to the job properly

I paid my indy £60 to reset after a previous owner fudged it with a 8 finger "Control, ALt, Delete" reset from youtube.

Regardless of the software being potentially out of date, it shouldn't stop the service indicator being reset IMO. Someone may come along and prove me wrong.

The service includes resetting the indicator so should be for them to sort as they have not completed the service.

On another note, having a software update is not a bad thing, shop around if you can.

....surely the service includes resetting the service indicator?

What if they’ve not done it correctly and expect you to foot the bill?

They recon they have set the time ie 365 days but can't do the miles....

I think that the issue is the miles overdue.

Kwik Fit couldn't do mine once for this reason but the youtube tutorial sorted it for me.

Get Karen to have a word............🤪

In all seriousness, if you had to spend £109 , that would buy an iCarsoft diagnostic tool , which it states will do the reset .

Or for just a little more there is the v2.0 , which has more functionality, but either will do the service reset

Just tried to do the reset myself...ignition on position 1 press phone call button and ok at the same time...ignition on to position 2...scroll down to assist plus...select service reset...confirm by ok...and it says unable to reset...according to u tube that should work...but it does not for me...the service menu says 364 days to next service...but also says service overdue by 5400 miles.....Crazy....

That would annoy me too .

Id be inclined to ask the dealer what the supposed benefits are of having this software update done ; and what disadvantages might arise out of not having it done ?

For example , does it include getting your sat nav updated ? If there is some tangible benefit then it may be worthwhile?

I am assuming the dealer will be updating the Instrument Cluster firmware (or whatever module that controls ASSIST). The issue may be a known bug, and possibly there's also a WIS document to that effect. If this is the case, and the car is no longer under warranty, then you may have to pay to get the firmware updated on the relevant module (unless the dealer is willing to apply to MB for Goodwill warranty).

What I would be interested to know is if it's a known issue and there's indeed a WIS document that says that the firmware should be updated to resolve it, or perhaps the dealer is suggesting the firmware update as part of an error-and-trial diagnostic process?

Keeping in mind that a specialist with genuine STAR will probably carry-out the firmware update for half of what the dealer is asking.

Issue is , there may not be a specialist on IOW .

Is the car industry the only one where you are expected to pay for software updates after you have bought it ?

I still fail to understand why any software upgrade that is released by a manufacturer to fix an inherent problem should be chargeable.

Agree completely but let's not confuse "update" and "upgrade"? The former should always be free, the later optional and chargeable?

To clarify, the software itself is provided by the manufacturer free-of-charge.

The cost is simply to cover the time it takes the dealer to book the car on and carry-out the work.

Incidentally, on some cars (not MB) it is possible to carry-out software updates DIY, and then it is absolutely free. But on MB cars, software updates require genuine STAR, so you'll need to pay someone with STAR to do the work.

And on some (Tesla) updates are free and done OTA, automatically. The future surely?
