Dealer system destroying remapped ECU's

@400ixl Thank you for that comprehensive reply. Reassures me that and makes sense in conjunction with what some others have kindly said on here.

I'll update in a couple of weeks after it has been in.

Thanks to all

I've heard a lot of recent talk about remaps not being so good on modern engines.

Ford looked at using the 1.5 3 cylinder in the upcoming Focus ST, but they could not safely get more than the 200bhp it has in the Fiesta.

In principle, every remapping can be unsafe for the engine, of course the tuners need to do what they doing and hit the right balance between performance and longevity/reliability.

The issue with modern engines is that they are already highly-stressed in order to squeeze maximum power out of the engine while reducing fuel consumption and emissions.

As an example, the M274 1.6L in the W204 C180 has the same power output as the older M271 1.8L it replaced.

And the M264 1.5L in the W205 C200 has the same power output as the older M274 2.0L it replaced.

The idea behind stressing the engine (or adding electric assistance etc) wasn't intended to make the C180 or C200 go any faster.... but to allow them to use smaller engines while keeping the same level of performance.

So a remapper has much less of a margin to work on when to comes to modern cars. And they should be more careful not to tune the engine out of the narrow safe margin.

But ultimately, a good tuner will know what they are doing.

UPDATE
Sat at Dealer now. Just been told the recall also involves an update on the Diesel Control Unit and the Electronic Control Unit.
I'll wait in anticipation !!

Yes of course.
It's ok. To be expected.

The guy will put it back on for me no probs.

Won't that just over right the update on the Diesel Control Unit and the Electronic Control Unit?

Even if it was a bench remap?

I'm not sure what they actually do when they open the ECU for a bench remap. Do they do any soldering etc?

have you asked your mapper what they do?

Most decent places now map via the ODB port so opening the ECU is no longer necessary. I suggest doing a little more research on mapping and going down the ODB route if you want to get a remap done again.

But I have read of instances of insurance companies checking ECUs.

It's been standard practice for years (decades). If you're involved in a claim that's significant enough for the insurance company to send an engineer out to inspect the car they *will* check for remapping (as well as physical modifications).

Plenty research done on my ECU model thanks. It's one of the new encrypted ones that have to be benched, thus an OBD is out of the question. It just won't read via OBD.

what is a "bench remap"?

what are you trying to achieve with a remap, given that you have admitted you couldn't really notice a difference after it was remapped

Really??
Im not being rude pal but I ain't even answering that

No offence meant Lee, just wouldn’t be my cup of tea having someone opening up my ECU to remap it. My local specialists (GAD) have seen several that were done by Stevie Wonder

I imagine the new encrypted ones are aimed to prevent remapping?

you seem to be in a world you don't understand nor do you seem to understand the consequence of your actions...enjoy your journey into the unknown...and I hope others may still consider helping you..

Yes it waa GAD who I got all the info off. I'm aware there is folk out there who butcher the ECU, not really knowing what they are doing.

I'm comfortable with it beong remapped, I certainly wouldn't of done it otherwise. Thanks

So, what was the outcome?
