8 days ago, I ordered a new laptop from sonystyle ..

premium priced, but I liked the keyboard and the fact you could get it in white.

today, they called on the office line and said:

1. they have cancelled my order
2. they had been trying to call me on my mobile -- they have not (they got the correct number)
3. they had sent lots of emails which I never received -- they got the details wrong, despite me saying to the sony person, "c", "i", "t" and "i" 5 times, he put in "city"!!
4. they want proof of address (such as driving licence or bank statement!!) before they will reinstate the order -- none of this was asked for initially.

I told the lady to get someone senior to call me back.

Anyone get any good deals on Sony laptops? Looking at the CS series.

My advice, steer well clear of Sony laptops. Your customer service experience will be worstened further if you ever have a problem with the laptop (which you will).

Get a refund and take your money elsewhere. Sony are no longer the quality company they used to be.

I had a VAIO for 6 years, and it gave up last week.

What company would you recommend now?

Put it this way, there is no company that I would specifically suggest you stay away from other than Sony. :D

OK, maybe thats not entirely correct, I'd include Packard Bell and the budget Compaq laptops found in the high street stores as well.

Laptops used to be huge money... now, good ones can be had for £400. With this in mind, the cheapest way of staying current is to find the sweet spot and upgrade every 2 years. Forget paying for fancy looks, just compare hardware spec and build quality.

Bang for buck, Acer scores well and come with 2 years warranty.

Dell FTW

You cant really go wrong with Dell but they arent necessarily the cheapest anymore.

Another vote for Dell... I have one running at home 24/7 as a media center... the motherboard failed a few months ago and the very next day I had a techie at my house replacing the motherboard. I was very impressed (a little less when he started browsing through my video "backups"; but hey)

Toshiba used to be amazing... but the last toshiba I had let me down and I wasn't too happy with the service so I would be hard pressed to recomend them nowadays...

Acer does not sell to public directly ..

any recommendation on good on line supplier?

We've currently got a 21 inch Vaio all in one desktop (4 years old ), a 15.4 vaio laptop (18 months old) and a 16 inch vaio laptop (9 months old).

Not had any problems with them at all.

Sony's are great pieces of kit.

I've used Dells, Packard Bells, HP's and had no end of trouble with them over the years.

The Sony stuff is great, pricey but great.

And, the package is just so right.

I suppose I'm a Sony nut in the same way someone could be an Apple nut!

You're in the minority I can assure you. I get sent Sony models every now and again to review. Some are gifts and end up being used long term loaners and they just seem to disintegrate

I test laptops for a living (currently have... let me see.... erm 7 different models on the go on my desk at this moment in time)

How about this for an example go to the Sony site, try and find the support pages and drill down to download driver updates for one of your machines. You'll find that there pretty much arent any updates since your laptop was produced. Aftercare, updates and support are virtually non existant.

Compare that to Dell or anyone else for that matter.

And when you get a hardware issue with your Sony, you find they want you to send it to France for repair. Compare that to Dell who'll send an engineer to your house/hotel/wherever (next day) to rectify the issue and swap out the faulty component.

Sony are so far off the competition its untrue.

I can second Spike's comments... our librarians bought 5 sony's without telling us... after a year, not a single was was still working! Sony makes some great kit; I love their mp3 players and screens... sadly, their laptops are really at the lower end quality wise...

I will 3rd Spike.

My daughter's Vaio is on its 3rd keyboard and the paint is coming off the media keys for the 3rd time.

You can't extend the warranty and post-warranty support is utterly cr@p.

You can't buy parts and their service charges mean its cheaper to buy again.

The Sony of 5 years ago is long gone.

Sony's now off the agenda .. especially their really poor customer 'service' at the ordering stage.

No one has called despite them saying someone would.

Always had good service and decent pricing from Scan in Bolton (at the back of the Reebok if you're local) or scan.co.uk. if you're not. They sell Acer if that's what you are after, among others.

Check their 'today only' page.

Generally good service. :)

OK - just seen - London E1 - scan.co.uk then:doh:

DELL ADAMO LAPTOP

expensive but looks lovely ..

they have even reduced the price ..

£2249 plus £99 (external disc drive) = £2348

they have offered £2099

I have told them number needs to start with a "1".

They are calling me back at 8pm :)

I think you're mad :D

Two grand on a laptop that'll benchmark slower than a 4 year old machine just because it looks pretty? :dk:

Still looks way way too expensive.

you're right.

thanks for the sanity check

is MAC OS better?

been using Vista Home Premium .. what a load of garbage and rubbish .. it is worse, far worse, than Windows XP.

true.

have gone off this idea.

Sony's ARE fab if the label says 'Made in Japan' if it's a 'Made in China/USA' I'd avoid at all costs! I've been told that by the head honcho of the PC section at Fry's in Vegas & have seen it over the years too, I use a SZ at home as does Paul & he also has a Sony CR IIRC at work all of which are great and P is known for killing technology in 30 secs flat!!
