dealing with sonystyle.co.uk

Sony's ARE fab if the label says 'Made in Japan' if it's a 'Made in China/USA' I'd avoid at all costs! I've been told that by the head honcho of the PC section at Fry's in Vegas

ROTFL You trust the knowledge of shopstaff in Frys? :D

Was the guy trying to sell you a laptop at the time?

FWIW, I don't believe any (hardly) laptops are made in Japan anymore. Around 85% are now made in China with smaller numbers coming out of Mexico and recently the Czech Republic.

That said, they are all based on an AMD or intel chipset... all produced in the same places (not Japan). laptops are commodity items now, all essentially the same damn thing with different skins. Just worry about the price, warranty and support, the hardware is all much of a muchness.

I favour Dell for work and Sony for play.

We have a VAIO at home and have had it 5 years this month, and it's been great.

I'm holding on to my Dell until I have no choice but to give it back. We now use HPs. Hmph.

Get A Mac.

Say goodbye to viruses. say hello to a fab operating system, super fast start ups, and laptop designed to work using its own software

I got an Apple in January, by far the best computing move I ever made.

Especially if you like photo's you want to archive your cd's, you want reliability, durability, no viruses, Music in general have a look at Garage Ban the software pre installed.

And you will probably end up with an ipod and an Iphone.

Whats Microsoft ever done well.

Nope, not normally but they ARE better than Circuit City or Best Buys!

Nope, P had already bought from the Sony store! And he knew this, it was cheaper at Sony than Frys!

Both SZ's have 'Made in Japan' on them! :)

OK where do I begin .....

1) expensive hardware

2) crap mice (I use a MS one with my Macbook :wallbash:)

3) crap displays on plastic Macbook

4) that menu bar

5) they do hang/crash (but not as often).

6) did I mention the price ?

But worst of all I'm willing to put up witrh all that and I'll probably cough up the Mac tax for another one.

Whats Microsoft ever done well.
Some stuff in the distant 80s:

Xenix

MS C compiler 4.0 / Codeview

I have an iMac and the window I'm using keeps disappearing up to the top of the screen or to one side. Anyone know why this allegedly perfect computer does such a thing.

On top of that I bought a Logitect MX1100 mouse today and downloaded the software for it. The mouse works but Logitech's Control Center just says no Logitech hardware found. Strange as I had just used one of their mice to open the application.

So Mac's are not quite the perfect computer after all. Probably some mysterious setting needs adjusting, but it has been more trouble that my Sony laptop running Vista Ultimate or now Windows 7 RC.

In System Preferences click on Dashboard & Expose. With active screen corners you can hide window or view all windows by moving the cursor to relevant corner of the screen.

Wow! Thanks eGuru, I've disabled Spaces and Expose and so far it seems to have done the trick. I hate it when computers take control and do things I never asked for or intended ( I'd never have thought of looking there for the answer, especially as it it obvious once pointed out).

Glad to help out. I do like this feature but can be a pain when you do it by accident. After 5 years of using a Mac I am still discovering new features!

And when you get a hardware issue with your Sony, you find they want you to send it to France for repair.

I'd agree with that.

My old Vaio needed a new cd/dvd drive and I was without it for two weeks.

I asked for the part to fit myself or have installed at a local computer shop and was given an absolute NO!

The same part failed again after 2, years but because the machine was older by this time I managed to pick up the same part off ebay for £8.

I then bought an HP Pavilion DV9088EA laptop which has been pretty troublesome too. New hard drive and needs a new keyboard to. It has crashed time after time 6-7 times in a day sometimes (and then behaves itself for 3 weeks) and the fact I need a new keyboard £120 and possibly a new fan £? means I'll have to buy another machine soon.

I may well buy a DELL 17" laptop this time.

Oh, and the support at HP isn't that good either.

You're in the minority I can assure you. I get sent Sony models every now and again to review. Some are gifts and end up being used long term loaners and they just seem to disintegrate

I test laptops for a living (currently have... let me see.... erm 7 different models on the go on my desk at this moment in time)

How about this for an example go to the Sony site, try and find the support pages and drill down to download driver updates for one of your machines. You'll find that there pretty much arent any updates since your laptop was produced. Aftercare, updates and support are virtually non existant.

Compare that to Dell or anyone else for that matter.

And when you get a hardware issue with your Sony, you find they want you to send it to France for repair. Compare that to Dell who'll send an engineer to your house/hotel/wherever (next day) to rectify the issue and swap out the faulty component.

Sony are so far off the competition its untrue.

Not just Laptops ,

Sony used to be THE name in hi-fi , video etc ........

They are still pretty much industry standard in broadcast video equipment , although competitors have eroded the monopoly they once had , but in most other arenas they have lost the pole position they once had .

I have worked in hi-fi ; pro/broadcast video ; audiovisual all my working life and used to sell/purchase/use Sony equipment prominently , but nowadays they don't always even make it onto my shortlist when considering new acquisitions .

I've been using Apple computers since before they were Macs , and still discovering new things .......

then again , I've been driving for 35 years and still learning too !

Don't overlook the Dell Outlet site either.

We recently picked up a second Dell XPS 1530 laptop dual core 2.5Ghz/500GB/4GB/256MB graphics/1920x1050 with Bluray reader and a 3year in-home support contract for £602 delivered. It flies and Bluray via the HDMI-out is great. XPS support is totally different to the standard support - you get quick online or phone support and next day on-site.

Used to be a bit of a lottery getting dented or scratched but now the site identifies these and you can filter them out (or in to save more money). Ours is absolutely pristine.

Many are the result of changed orders where Dell find it cheaper to build again than to change a built machine.

Dell supply dlowloadable manuals for taking the beasts apart and all parts are available on line or over the phone.

4) that menu bar

this is the most annoying thing .. it means you cannot get full screen

or if you can, I haven't figured it out since I only use a Mac sometimes when visiting sister

The top menu bar... or the bottom "dock" ?

The bottom dock can be hidden (Apple>System Preferences>Dock>Automatically Hide and Show Dock)... and the top bar moved around (or hide it with 3rd party apps (like ASM or menushade)... Alternatively, if you're willing to get your hands dirty, you can modify the plists for the applications you want so they hide the menu bar on launch...

Just went to John Lewis and handled a MacBook Pro .. it is indeed a thing of beauty. So well built and makes Sony and everything else look like complete rubbish.

Am going to order this tomorrow:

MacBook Pro, 13-inch, Aluminium
Part Number: Z0GL
2.53GHz Intel Core 2 Duo 065-8490
4GB 1066MHz DDR3 SDRAM - 2x2GB 065-8492
500GB Serial ATA Drive @ 5400 rpm 065-8498
SuperDrive 8x (DVD±R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW) 065-8501
Backlit Keyboard (British) & User's Guide (English) B065-8526
COUNTRY KIT B065-8519
£1192.55 (delivery included)

much cheaper and better than Dell Amado.

Does standard MacOS include Safari? Is it any good? Firefox apparently much better?

will it be difficult to load my PC pics, videos and Word files from external HDD to new Mac?
