Did all of the C219 Grand Edition models have the upgraded engines?

I have always been fond of the original CLS and the Grand Edition models had some very attractive upgrades in terms of equipment In particular from my perspective the fitting of a memory function to both driver and passenger seats. There was also a significant increase in power from 221hp to 272 hp as well as additional Torque.

Looking around on Autotrader I found a decent-looking example that could well be a replacement for the E Class for a year or two before I start looking in earnest for a Bentley Continental Coupe.

The advertisement shows Grand Edition badges but lists it as 221 hp as do a number of online car checks. I know that many dealers are not exactly accurate with their descriptions but was just wanting to check. I have asked for the VIN to run a data card check but do not hold out much hope of receiving it and cannot find a way of obtaining the full VIN from the registration number
.
There are a couple of oddities with the car. It had an MOT in February this year and passed with a few advisories. It was then presented for test on September 23rd whereby it failed with 5 dangerous defects all relating to brake condition. The oddity here was there was only a 229 miles difference between the February pass and the dangerous fail in September.

It was presented for a new MOT on September 27th and passed without any advisories.

From what I can tell from the pictures it has the odd minor scuff and some of the wheels would benefit from refurbishment and the gap around both headlights looked a little odd but was symmetrical. Perhaps this is normal.

The link is below and comments are welcomed.

If I bought the CLS I might well keep the E 320CDi Sport for a while whilst fettling the CLS

There is also this one for sale, with lower mileage and slightly cheaper but with some odd faults!

I imagine that the warning light is a glow plug relay but why try to sell it with such an easily repairable fault and comedy rear springs?

According to this contemporary press release, yes they did all get the power upgrade:

There's something in the back of my mind that the power increase was achieved by the fitting of the Brabus D6(?) tuning box ex-works. I could be wrong on that though. However, if I'm right it would be easy to spot under the bonnet.

Yes, you are right. The Grand Edition had a factory fitted Brabus tuning box.

What are your feelings on the first one I linked to? 🤣🤣

The wiring for the Brabus box should be visible down the RHS of the black "thing" against the passenger bulkhead under the bonnet.

It has the wrong wheels , it should have 18" AMG alloys.

Look as if it has some paint on o/s front wing , it is a bit orange peely.

Nice upgraded Nappa leather interior.

No Harmon Kardon sound system.

Isn’t No HK system a bonus , they are £1k plus to fix

Dont know how the standard system sounds but the HK was just about OK , i would rather have it than not. If the amp chucks it them i am sure there is a retrofit option out there somewhere plus there has got to be a few around in the breakers by now should it need anything.

Thank you for your input.

I noticed the wheels. That's another point against it.

Not bothered re Sound system though.

I imagine most cars of that age have had paint and a decent mop and polish may sort it out to a good standard if it's in the lacquer?

Very nice car for the price . It helps for you that you know all about the om642 as well so you are eyes wide open about the normal issues
It hasn't been taxed since January and only just over 200 miles covered between February and September is odd plus an MOT pass with advisories to a Dangerous fail on 5 items related to the brakes but now fixed on the follow up retest..... Hmm

What about a nicely spec`d standard one with a remap which should take it over what the Brabus box is adding.

Indeed. Not keen on messed around cars. The main advantage though is that the GE model has the memory seats which can be rare.

Memory pack wasn`t standard on the GE , Brabus box / front grill / xenon headlights / AMG alloys / GE mats / headlamp housing in grey were all standard fit , everything else was an option. Mine had the memory pack / HK but never had an auto dimming RV mirror until i retrofitted one which was a simple plug and play job.

My CLS was a sort of DIY Grand Edition. It had Passion leather, memory seats, upgrade lamps and wheels, but I put the Brabus D6 kit on it myself.
It remains one of the best cars I have owned.

Is the chassis different to the E Class?

I have heard that it is more responsive, particularly steering response and feel?

Much more than you could ever guess looking at the E class platform list of parts.
The whole architecture of the car is different with a much lower, stiffer shell. Wider track due to wheel offsets, and revised springs and dampers makes the car much more a sports saloon than the E Class can ever be.
Crucially the car gives away very little in terms of refinement to the S class despite the frameless door glass.
I know, I had them both back to back in 2009.

Many thanks for the comprehensive reply. 👍

My E320 CDI is a great car, spacious, comfortable on good quality road surfaces, well made and can cover long distance with ease.

What it is not is involving.

Despite being the "Sport version it isn't particularly rewarding to hustle along.

The worst culprit is the steering which is low geared and doesn't provide much feedback.

Hopefully a CLS will be better in this respect.
