To MBCLUB-

Why does my auto Diesel engine stall on cold starts as soon as I change from P PARK to D DRIVE or R Reverse ?


More info:
-I've turned the AC unit off before starting the car.
-Battery & alternator seem alright.
-Revs drop under 1000rmp when selecting a gear.
-Recently changed the turbo.
-Will clean out egr system
-Intend to replace ENGINE COOLANT TEMP SENSOR as this acts like a choke with the ECU.

Any help or experience will be listened to!

I have just started to experience this too.
Car (W210) is 13 years old and has done 208,000 miles.

Hi,
If you leave it running for a while after the cold start will it go into gear without stalling?

Yes as soon as I leave it running for five mins or so it will run normally

I'm thinking maf sensor, map sensor or egr sticking.

Time to spray egr cleaner in and electrical contact cleaner on the sensors I think.

I have had a problem like this with my w211 .when set to R or D it stalls for 3 sec and then engaged.when esp warning shows as defect this happens.
