diesel engine & gearbox software update - is there one?

My 2012 E 220 CDi ( 30,000 mls) developed a surging of tickover engine revs ( rev coumter waving up and down ) which also meant it lurched at low road speeds. MB main dealer claimed to have done a software update to both engine and gearbox ( november 2015 ) but I can not see any improvement. Does anyone know if such an update exists or were they just fobbing me off. Normally when I have work done by MB I get a printout of the results or at least a printout of work done.but this time nothing. Also it also had a reluctant to release handbrake which is now worse than when it went in. They did make a nice job of valeting it though!

Yes we regularly update engine and box ecus, I try and do them every service if I get chance, if the faults still there go back and get sorted bud

It may not be a software issue too. It could be something else causing the problem.
