Deisel Estates

As a slight re-word of a previous post, can anyone point me in the direction of what Deisel Estate models I should be looking for at around the £3000-£4000 mark and if there are any points to look out for on them.
(appologies if there are already posts on this but I dont know which models to do a search on)
Cheers
Mark

Go for a turbo

I just searched on autotrader for any mercedes estate between £3k and £4k, national, and found 29 cars, none of which are diesels! They were all W124s though.

EDIT: Every so often you find a dreamer! ;)

1996 N Reg Mercedes-benz E-Class 3.0D E300 Bucklow Garage LtdDiesel, Automatic, Midnight Blue, Estate, 120,000 miles, 5 Doors. MB . . . . (trade)

Second edit: What am I doing posting on a thread about either diesels or estates?

You will not get a turbo for this money, in fact you may need to stretch your budget generally. You will be looking for a 124 series car. Go for the 300D as the 250 will be too slow. Manual makes for more performance but auto is the nicer option.
Mechanically look for steering free play and worn auto box. Check the engine starts easily from cold, this is the acid test for any diesel.

Only one rust area, the front wing just above the bumper next to the wheelarch.

You should get a 123 series for this money but it will be an older car with the old 5 cyl iron engine. Tough but as smooth. there is a 5 cyl 240 which is nice but slow.

Did they do a 300 turbo diesel in the 124 range?

Not in the UK. Some have had aftermarket turbos added by TB Turbos.
