Hi Guys

New to this Forum, I am part of the US form but they cant help very much with this issue.

I replaced the fuel filter last night on my ml270 (OM612) and that was fine. Reconnected and all went alright. refilled it what I thought was full.

Started for about 5 seconds now there's nothing. just cranks.

Anyone know how to bleed the air out ?

Also the car was running alright before, whereas now im getting an injector blow by on cylinder 2 … anyone know if there would be a link ??? As this one has baffled me !

If you guys need anything let me know
Scott

Injector blow by should not be related to the fuel filter change.
Sometimes it takes a fait bit of cranking to get it to start...

I know ! My thoughts exactly but not 100% sure If this problem was here before hand or not...

So battery charger attached and cranked a good 30 times or so … still nothing. Any ideas on how to bleed the air out the system ?

Hi, First make sure that the pipes that you fitted back to the fuel filter are well seated and the clips are tight! if not it will draw air in from there stopping it starting, then if all else fails crack the metal pipe open from the high pressure pump that goes to the fuel rail just so its off its seat got to be care full here as its high pressure and can be dangerous crank the engine and wait until you see fuel coming out of the union connecter when it does tighten it back up, if it still wont start do the same with the six injector pipes as said only one turn loose so it just shows signs of fuel at the injectors, good idea to put some old towel or kitchen cloth around the area to soak up the fuel, good luck dave

I always thought these are self bleeding... I replaced a few injectors and high pressure pumps never needed to bleed anything.
Double check you put everything back correctly... Fill the filter with fresh diesel and see if it starts.

Hi, Yes i agree they are self bleeding but it was a last resort to try bleeding it see if there was any air in the system, i have never had a problem either to be fair

+1 for the above.

I used to have to do it all the time to VW engines.

The only time i have ever had a problem with a car is the Ford it took bleeeding (pun intended) ages to get the darn thing going again but repeated pretty much the above until it did.

Might be an idea to have have someone cranking it while you loosen an tighten each one in turn.

Just thought! i know the pipes to and from the fuel filter are different diameters eg the one from the fuel tank and the one to the high pressure pump, if these are the wrong way round then it will not start! worth a check it would run for a couple of seconds with the fuel left in the rail,
cheers dave

+1 for this.

So guys ! got it fixed thanks for the advice guys !

Think a new seal will fix this one ? Looks to me just like a common diesel/ black death thing.

Hi.
Yes thats the infamous black death.

Easy fix , However takes some time to clean all that muck, some people use oven cleaner or any other caustic products to shift it.

I use UPVC solvent cleaner and does the job well without damaging the aluminum cover.
My advice would be to chisel away as much as you can of that mess , then give it a really good clean , then fire it up , you can then know for sure where its leaking from , you can spray some water or solvent down the injector hole , you should see bubbles if its leaking.

Get some Mercedes Bolts , Preferably Honda Washers ( thicker)
Make sure the injector nozzle cap is not eroded , replace if necessary.

Hi Guys
So all good news !!! :D got 4 seals from MB (no idea where my Honda garage is!) but £3.50 for the 5 so im happy with that. Cleaned it up yesterday and was easy enough to do, we don't have too much Black Death. So took the injector out and well … couldn't find the coper seal ! after trying to feel\ find it for ages … I just threw in another one and buttoned it up to roughly 7NM, started it and all good !!!
Now I can give it back to my mum to take to the hospital tomorrow ! Only problem was took it out a test drive and well never realised the widescreen was full of diesel from the engine bay when I blew it with the air compressor so it didn't ignite :p

Lots of window was later all sorted, but still all over the car kinda :s

Plan is to do the other 4 cylinders however What does a eroded nozzle look like ? looked on the web and couldn't really find … Gd vs Bad any advice ?

Also ! when I was going to MB for parts I thought might look for some other parts, can someone tell me what the wee "Air Cleaners" do ?? Part no. A 163 430 00 69

Modern injectors are incredibly hi-tech precision devices.
The nozzles are very small - in order to ensure a very fine, precision spray pattern.
I would be surprised if visual examination could tell you the difference between a "good" nozzle and one that is eroded.
Erosion of a few tenths of a thou would probably be enough to render a nozzle out-of-spec.
If you've any doubts, take your injectors to a diesel specialist for testing.
Some time ago, I had injector problems - engine management light on !!!
Even my local garage (who are serious motor engineers) sent the injectors to a specialist for testing.
The problem was minute metal particulates in the injectors …… and I mean minute.
The solution was:
- 6 new injectors
- 1 replacement high-pressure diesel pump (that was the source of the
metal particulate contamination)
- Clean out all the fuel lines down-stream from the pump
OUCH !!!
None of this was visible to the naked eye.

Nozzle cap...or the very big Hex headed thing at the front.... These erode making it leak.... 3 of my old W210 injectors were worn that way.

The part i am on about is where it say locating pin in the image below.3551629b3d4b3fa2beacc9b2dc12cb38.jpg

This picture is from my Old W210 injector... You can see the wear on the cap or shroud if you zoom inIMG20190110150748-864x1152.jpg

Wow sounds like a nightmare job johnsco ! glad you got there in the end and it seems to be spraying enough all over the engine !! lol

Amazighman, wow looks quite grubby & is that the washer on the end or just the seat ? Couldnt find my seal when I done the seal last night, so just popped one in :p Working good now tho ! parents are going to the hospital bright and early and haven't heard anything … hopefully for the better ! lol

No eml light(or Diesel equivalent) yet so think the injectors are alright and my god they are rather expensive !

PS I have a few more jobs starting with the whooshing noise & what looks like a leaky intercooler ( going to do a spoke test) - Does anyone know of any after market intercoolers that will fit, that's cheeper than the MB ones ?
Turbo rebuild
& new pipes etc for the turbo.

Should I post some posts for these ?

You can get your old injectors reconditioned for about 80 quid each
Yes its the cap part of the injector thats worn there , there is a ridge ...when i i removed it i noticed that the washer was perfect clean underneath.... The blow was from the gap between the injector face and the top of the washer

amazighman, they look fine and seem to be working good. If I have any issues or the others seem in worse condition I may look into that one, cheaper than new ones !
Strange, but yeah couldnt see any washer on the injector ! or in the cylinder very strange !! but its working just now lol

johnsco Im in glasgow, wee bit away from essex :p but if it gets to that i will give them a shout, cheers for the recommendation.

However looking to rebuild it myself :D :S

You can rebuild your turbo pretty straight forward... However you have to get it checked and Balanced by a professional... Otherwise disaster might happen
