Diesel in engine oil?

W212 E250 CDI
Hi everybody,
I'm a new member of the forum and generally new to Mercedes.
I bought a 2011 w212 e250 cdi last month. Only 97k miles and decent service history. It was from the top of the price range so expected that I don't have to lay under the car every 2nd week. After a long ownership of 20 years old VW Sharan which took half of my weekends and all of my money away to keep it on the road I decided to go for a newer car.
The seller said he's selling the car (after 4 month ownership) because he found out that the pension in UK worth nothing so he has to go back to business and need a bigger car/van to tow a big foodvan. I don't know if he was aware of the fault or not but I'm afraid I don't have any legal stand against him.
I did an oil change last month and I found out yesterday that the oil level increased in the sump. I did the oil drip test on A4 paper and it shows a narrow transparent 3rd circle. So I concluded that there's fuel in the engine oil. However the engine runs fine starts on first crank hot/cold doesn't matter. The only other thing is that my average fuel consumption is 36.5 mph and it is 97-98% of motorway on 75-80 I mean 70 mph ;) I tought that it's about right as I have 245 wide tyre on the front and 265 on the rear but maybe it's not the case.
I'm going to do the leak off test tomorrow but is it worth to do or should I just remove the injectors and find somebody to test it properly on bench?

Is there any trustworthy magician in Ashford, Kent or near by who can help me to code the new injectors if I have to bite the bullet and buy a set of injectors?

Thanks for your help in advance!

You probably have frequent DPF regen going on...
Thanks for your quick answer. I was thinking about that as well but I have no idea how I can figure out when dpf regen happening. I'm using the car to commute to my workplace so 5-6 mins through the town than 25 mins motorway till my workplace. I've not heard the fan running or engine sound differently in this 1 month of usage. If the leak test won't show anything tomorrow than probably I'll remove the dpf to see the condition of it.

No first go and plug your car to SDS, there you can see how often regen has been happening, is it on all the time, diff and other(!) pressure sensor values on engine runing and without, see if regen is commanded by pressure diff sensor or calculated values. Without any diagnostics, you can disconnect pressure diff sensor and see there are no split in hoses and there free pass in sensor connection pipes to exhaust.

What's SDS? I did a bit of investigation today morning and actually I wasn't right when I wrote that the engine is smooth. It's on idle but at 1500 rpm it is shaking badly. :( Even the Rev gauge's needle drops a bit. I felt this shaking during driving but I thought it's just the prop shaft bearing because it mostly happened when I went uphill about 35-30 mph.

If you have ICarsoft MB v2 you can monitor your live DPF level and also see when it goes into a regen.
I can’t see how that would increase fuel into the oil though.
The shaking is most probably engine mounts that have worn out.

If the car is frequently failing to complete a regen cycle dut to driving conditions it can let diesel build up in the engine oil, but it will flag up a fault code if it detects this.

Thanks for your reply mate. Wouldn't the needle on the rev gauge stay steady if that's just an engine mount problem? I'll check the mentioned diag. I have a crapy delphi clone. I can monitor few thing with that but most features don't work. :/

Thanks for your answer. I don't have any warning sign so that at least a good sign.

It might not be failing in car point of view, it just triggers every few hundreds of miles. Though at some point this may trigger a code too. There is lotsa extra fuel fed to cylinder when regen is on, and part of it go unburned over the piston rings to the sump.

Uneven idle is also one sign of regen.

SDS = Star Diagnose System, mercedes own device which is ONLY full MB compatible diagnostics, with most wide features.

Would enough unburnt fuel from a regen go to the sump to make a difference?
When my car regens you cannot tell, maybe the only sign is a tinking sound coming from the exhaust due to the extra heat.
Could the OP’s problem be a faulty injector ?

Worth asking Phoenix Car Works, Unit F Chilmington Works, Old Chart Road, Ashford TN23 3DR, 01233 840888, www.phoenixcarworks.co.uk, who may also have Star or something very similar. Another to ask would be DP Motors down the old A20 from 10A towards Folkestone on the left, they service high end cars including MB's.

I take my s212 E350 and my wife's GLA to Stevensons at Larkfield. Absolutely excellent and they will lend you a car whilst yours is in by prior arrangement

Steve Garlic, now known as Stevensons, has been well known and respected as an MB specialist for decades, used to be over just off 7 Mile Lane before moving to current premises some years ago - but he's a lot further from Ashford than the 2 I mentioned!

Thank you Chris! I'll ask around how much it would be to do a bit of investigation. I would prefer to do myself as I always maitained and fix my own cars however I'm not a mechanic but I like to learn it and do it as well.

It's ok. I'm working in Rochester. 😊

Thank you Keith! Isn't it a bit pricy garage? I'll ask how much they would charger for a scanning but as I wrote to Chris I like to do myself my cars. However it might time to change my habbit as I'm getting older. 🤣 I just attached the picture of my oil drop test.

Not really.

You need to get a proper diagnosis from someone who has Star /Xentry (MB specific diagnostics)

Pretty sure DP have Xentry as they were able to update the DSR when they serviced one of my cars a year ago. If Darren was still at Phoenix I'd know that he has Star or a working clone as I've known his work for years, but unfortunately he left and I don't know if the new service manager has the required Star/Xentry access.

The fuel in the sump may or may not be an injector problem. Is there any smoke on cold start?
And the vibration may or may not be related - could be engine mounts, could also be torque converter if it does it under load.
It's a 13 yr old car and not worth a lot so be careful not to overspend on it - if it is otherwise running OK I would be tempted to just run it and do 5 or 6k mile oil changes and see if it gets any worse - it might do another 100k miles like this.
I'd also invest in a decent diag tool like the icarsoft - it will pay for itself with one diagnostic.
re the previous owner reason for selling after 4 months sounds like BS to me.
