Diesel supercars

There is no doubt that diesels have improved a lot over the last few years, I suppose the only thing holding them back is customer perception.

Well, that and the glorious, agricultural soundtrack ;)

Is it me or does the R8 look more ugly than usual in those pics? Did they add more vents or something?

Yeah, theres alot different than the standard petrol version, the engine bay had to be made larger, and it has a new front bumper with additional vents for cooling.

There's a road test of it in Top Gear mag. ... it's still officially just a concept car, although everyone expects it to go into production.

I'm sitting on the fence with this..

People buying this car or anything similar at £100K its probably a second, third car...

Are they bothered what their supercar does to the gallon....?

I'm not sure, In my head Petrol over the sound of a derv, filling it up using the black pump.....its just not right?

I'm 50 / 50 on this one

I thought the aim of buying a diesel is to save money with more MPG.
This kind off defeats the purpose. it is a V12 and the petrol is a V8.
I cannot see the owner doing galactic miles to recoup the price difference so what exactly is the point?

Err...stronger performance with lower emissions would be the first two thoughts. Couple that with better reliability and longevity and it's a winner.

C'mon guys, wake up this is the 21st Century..

Capable of firing the car from 0-62mph in only 4.2 seconds and on to a top speed of 200mph, this R8 is even faster than the petrol V8 machine on which it is based.

I've got a diesel supercar, it's a W204 C320CDi Elegance.:bannana: :bannana: :bannana:

Right .
so i will just buy a diesel V12 supercar so that i can be green?
As for reliability and longevity i am not so sure .so how green is 25mpg

as for stronger performance, well it has a V12.
I think a petrol V12 with 2 turbos will blow the diesel out of line.

Sure, but if you want an R8 and the diesel one is the quickest ...

Also a lot depends on pricing.

o- 60 for the petrol is 4.0s .Still faster than the diesel.
Top speed is slower as it has fewer cyclinders and Hp, so i say wait for the R8 with the RS6 engine in it.
That should sort out any diesels. 5.0l v10 biturbo 580hp

and the annoyingly narrow power band

It has to happen!:)

I race against them every other week with a petrol engined car and they win!
My road cars are diesel by choice. (And really are super cars!)
I have worked on one which was good for 350mph+
Word has it that even Bentleys will soon be using the black pump!

what are you racing man?with or without the turbos?
Either stick the turbos in a petrol as well or remove the ones that seem to be in every diesel car. without the turbos the diesel is just that a plain old lump of steel.

Not my fault they seem to run out of steam at 4k revs or thereabout.
as i said before, not a level playing field so let us stop the comparisons.
I have never known a normally asp diesel to beat a petrol, and i have never known a turbo charged diesel to beat a turbo petrol.
Hopefully in rallying where they all use turbos, let us see diesels there .not in WTC or BTCC or lemans where petrols are banned from forced inductions.

As turbos are banned in f1, ulikely a diesel will turn up.

So everyone to his cup of tea an kettle of fish.
As for emissions and being green. yawn!

If you want to be really green, walk without breathing out

I find that the powerband in a modern Diesel is wider than a Petrol. Where I have to work a petrol engine hard the Diesel produces more user friendly power low down.

Not sure about in a supercar though!

This was the quote. not sure you can describe that as a car
