ive just seen a web site for a plug-and-play tuning box and claim to increase bhp and torque whilst lowering fuel consumption, now all this seems to good to be true and im pretty sure you guys are gonna confirm that as ive seen other bogus products that claim to increase certain aspect of a car for "next to nothing" but this is quiet expensive and its actually looks like a proper company could this actually work?????

thanx

Just to clarify, do you mean a tuning box for a diesel W209 (2002-2009), rather than W208 (1997-2002)?

Also, what's the website you mention?

He must mean a 209, no 208 oil burners over here.

A tuning box IS NOT as good as a remap and is not really a good idea.

theres a few sites ive looked into but this is just one

DIESEL PERFORMANCE TUNING :: Diesel tuning power unit for more power :: torque tuning for cars and boats

I just typed tuning box into google and got a lot of sites all claiming that this little box improves power torque fuel consumption (which i doubt)

yeah it is a 209 - 54 plate diesel clk 270

i basically was just curious (and was toying with the idea of a remap) wasnt sure what sort of prices a remap would cost and what id get out of it ?

Tuning box's. I've had a problem with mine, I got it from SommerSports.com > Home

Stay away from them, they suck big time. Had major problems with the car when I installed it. No point in a tuningbox, want it done, get a remap. That's what I'm going to do now.

I had one on my previous car, a 203 C270. Was a Dragon and was very good. Plays havoc with your econometer but there was a noticeable increase in torque and a small increase in economy.

Sold it to another member, who, as far as I know, has had no problems with it.

Second hand, you're looking at anywhere between £60-£100

a good re-map would set you back about £350-£400 for your 270 CDi

Better throttle responce
Improved mpg
35-40bhp increase
40-45 torque increase

over all a noticable difference and alot of fun :D

Your clk270 cdi would prob have about 177bhp so you be looking to get about 215-220bhp.

ok thanx a lot for everyone who has replied. so basically its many against and 1 for the tunning box lol so it looks like a remap it is.

a few questions on the remap though, is that a garaunteed outcome or does it depend on the state of cars engine i.e if its in an older state will i get less of a increase?

also whats a good company to start with im in the essex/london area

I have a Brabus D4 box on mine, you can notice the improvement. 205BHP 420 ish NM of torque. Not cheap though.

No it woudnt really effect how much power you get, it's wiser not to push the car to its limits when re-maping the ECU specially if the car had alot of miles on the clock! A reasonable safe 35bhp shouldnt really be a problem and you would easily get that from you 270 cdi.

Phone Ray at West-Tuning hes the man to ask about all these sort of things...

Advantages of a box are you can remove and sell if not happy or sell after car sold and recoup your money.

Disadvantages are some are ****:D

I had a dastek on my last disco and was pretty good, occasionally put engine light on, a fault which apparently they rectified, box was also programmable by them.

I sold this and got half my money back and had a remap done, engine was smoother and slightly more powerful than the box, and as i was a member was actually cheaper!

Disadavantage of remap car sold and you lost the chip and the money.

Verdict if you must get one get a remap, but in one small way or anothe i had trouble with both chip and the remaps.

Strange thing is this is the first petrol car i have owned in over 15 years and dont feel the need to chip it:).

Just thinking bloke at work golf tdi 53 plate cheap chip from e bay and instead of his usual 50mpg now gets 60 mpg plus all the time and according to him no probs so far over the year he has owned the car.

£60 iirc.

Also last boss vito vanette thing, brabus chip more mpg and power, he was very happy with it but then it was over a grand.

Remember & tell your insurance what you are proposing.
Mine will not entertain tuning boxes or remaps, others will, but the premium will go up.

will they know if a remap has been done during my ownership?

surely there is the possibility of the previous owner having this done and the current owner not knowing its been done ? i would tell the insurance company anyway its better safe than sorry

yeah the cars a 209 with 70k on the clock but it hasnt been abused its imaculate and just had a new rad so im quiet confident in the condition, the only thing thats making me concerned is the gear box what sort of figures will that take before booom!!!

Simply no as you said it could have been done by the previous owner plus ECU remaps are undetectable!

ECU maps are not undetectable, despite what remappers tell you, and claiming ignorance may not be enough for an insurance company to pay out if you need to claim.

Russ

I did plenty of research when I was considering buying one.

Great, I didnt actually know its detectable, i've always been told that they can't detect it and I actually believed that becuase one time mercedes tryed to see if my e55 was remaped and they coudnt actually know.

If you dont mind could you please share the ways of how they could detect if the ECU has had a remap by this specific owner or even if the ecu has just been remaped? i'd love to know, thanks.

If you ask most tuners, they will say it cannot be detected.
If you ask an honest one, he will say,

"Contrary to popular statements no one can say for 100% certainty that the remap will be undetectable. However, the modification to the software will not show up on any main dealer diagnostic equipment and therefore unless you tell them that it has been done, they will be none the wiser."

In reality, if someone suspects the ECU has been remapped, there are ways of proving it. If no -one is looking for a remap, they will not see it has been done.
