Difference between standard and comfort mode

I have just purchased an E55 and am finding my way around the car. I wanted to know what the 'real' difference is between Comfort and Standard mode on the gearbox? The handbook is vague on this.

Comfort mode changes gears up earlier than sport mode and so makes for a more leisurely drive. And if I recall correctly it starts the car off in second gear.
