Dipstick ?

I have an 02-03 211 E320 petrol. At the back of the engine & next to the ATF dipstick, is what looks like an original engine oil dipstick facility. Is my assumption correct, that this was an earlier method before the electronic method was fitted. & was just a redundent leftover. If so, can you still buy an original dipstick? For this engine. Cheers.
