Car
Mercedes E-220 blutec
I had firs B service at 16100 mile today. E-220 bluetec 2015 model. On top of my service cost £660 charged for front discs/pads and rear pads as over 80% used. They said. When picked up the car after 2miles of daylight driving warning came on . Back to dealer again , car diagnosed and offered a new ECU need to be replaced . Front LED light only cost£500 to replace as there is no bulb on it . As car is under warranty the ECU is free of charge but a week waiting and another appointment to finish the job. A coolant pump has replaced and covered on warranty. Car only done 16100. Worry about next service cost . Sounds ripping off if your a MB car owner. I'm in thinking of a vw or Peugeot . Service cost more sensible.

The discs and pads are still fine on my E class after 26,000 miles. There's something wrong if they're gone at 16,100 miles.

Just replaced the front discs + pads on the CLS after 37k , pads were done but the discs still had 1.2mm on them before they got to their minimum thickness but i replaced them anyway whilst i had the tools out.

I'm really fooled to trust them .

Brakes wear at different rates depending on your driving style.

Gentle motorway cruising will see the brakes last for many miles, while stop/go in traffic jams, speed bumps, and traffic lights will take a heavy toll on the brakes.

I would not take it for granted that the brakes did not need replacing, just because the car covered only 16k miles.

I see no disappointment here other than a fellow MB owner who believed them when they recommended the discs needed replacing, they say the same to me every year :(

As for the ECU.... dealers don't fix anything these days, they replace complete units.

Replacing ECUs is a particular favourite.... once the car is out of warranty, just take it to s good Specialist.

Not only will servicing be cheaper, but faults will be diagnosed and fixed instead of replacing entire units.

I don't know what's the issue with your car, but chances are that a Specialist would have fixed it without fitting a complete new ECU.

I can admit to being "conned" by local MB dealer who said the discs were down to xxmm? what they did not say was what they started at and what a minimum was.

I believe the person was moved on or dismissed.
Things like this stick in the mind, so when I blew XX K on a new car guess what? it is was not a Merc.
Their loss.

In business honesty pays?

Out of interest, how much did they charge you for the "B" service ?
Re the discs & pads , mine's 2016 E220 and I've never seen my wheels get covered in brake dust so quickly on any other car I've had.

The problems are nothing to do with the service.

If your car has problems they need to be fixed at any time. If consumables wear out due to the manner of driving its hardly MBs fault.

Basically you've had a light go, a few warranty repairs and the consumables have been consumed. Is that correct? OK it's not the best for 16000 Mile 2 year old car, but it's not that bad either!

Just avoid the main dealer after first three years. Find a good Indy who actually cares and watch the running costs fall. I was worried about the costs of running my CLK 350 but I have a superb Indy who keeps it tip top and charges £50 an hour. There is zero benefit come resale in having main dealer stamps. A good Indy stamped history with backup invoices is just as good.

You will find that an Indy Mercedes specialist will be far more pragmatic and provide cheaper solutions to all the common issues.

Personally whilst under warranty I would prefer parts to be replaced by new ones and not have someone repair the faulty part.

A full main dealer service history would be something I would be looking for if buying used, rightly or wrongly it would indicate the owner cared enough for his car to look after it.

There are a good few specialists that we know of and are highly thought of but many buyers of a used Mercedes would not be forum members or know these highly respected people particularly where cars are not sold locally.

I've had all my Mercedes Serviced by an independent after the warranty expired. No huge bills and I had no trouble selling them when I changed cars . In fact I sold my 190E back in 1998 after 7 years trouble free driving for £2500 more than Mercedes offered me. I think the first 2 years I had it serviced by mercredes all the rest done by independent garage I used for years.

Do you work for a main dealer?

You are right but my point is ,for a 16000 miles mercedes car is not reasonable this cost at service B . I am covered for ECU . However I believe merc approved cars are not reliable on sale.

I will trust MB specialist after my 3rd service . You are just paying to main dealer £160 an hour instead of £50 to locals
