Disappointed with my car. Respect to the 335d!

I own an X6 with the 3.0 diesel twin turbo engine which is also fitted in the 335d/535d/635d etc.

It is an incredible engine (even in my 4x4) with massive remapping capabilities and high power gains. Acceleration is very quick!

Having said that though, I'd have thought the AMG would still walk all over it.

I'd like to tell you what happened between our Golf and a mapped C63 from 60mph onwards ...
Oh heck here we go about fast golfs. Don't shout at me I do have an 5.5 tt AMG too lol !

I test drove a 335d and was totally underwhelmed. It may have been the lack of noise or maybe the one I drove as broken (traded in and hadn't been through the the workshop....... I keep seeing posts like this and think I should give it another chance. They are available on really cheap lease deal!

I went in a friends mapped 335d coupe a few years ago and was mightily impressed with it. As said they achieve great figures mapped and from memory it was running about 370bhp and 550lb/ft. Up to 40mph it was definitely quicker than my E55 as seemed to get the power down very well. We also had a very little play on the motorway and I reckon up to about 60 - 80mph it was probably as quick as my E55, but after that I would have been pulling on it steadily, but not as much as I would have liked!!!!

I don't know about down in England etc but up here in Scotland especially round the central belt the motorways are patrolled by the traffic police pretty heavily and also some of the sections are down to 50mph limit.

So most of these high powered diesels are VERY quick getting to the limit that the AMGs don't even get a chance to do anything.

I find on a daily basis that I hardly use any of the power of the E63.

But the noise is addictive.

That's when I start thinking about putting my sensible hat on and start thinking about changing for something a little less crazy.

Hi,
I used to have a remapped 123d 3 door m-sport.
My next door neighbour has a modified lime green Ford Focus cosworth. He came behind me on a country road that I knew well and started too push me a bit. He was surprised when he could not get round my car - despite trying very hard.
The diesel BMWs have really good engines - it is a shame that MB seem to be lagging with their Diesel engines, in comparison.
Cheers
Steve

I was up against a DMS mapped 335D coupe at Santa pod the other week, had no issues seeing it off.

It did 13.2sec while I managed 12.8sec in my SLK55.

I find it really hard to believe a remapped 3L diesel can come close to a 6.2L V8 with over 500hp, you sure you didn't have it in comfort mode, lol! :D

I'll see if I can find the video.

Hi,
Other scenario is 335d badges on something petrol and more potent?
Would be the sort of sneaky thing that I would do!
Cheers
Steve

35d s are quick no doubt. But it should never give give a C63 any hassle, I reckon the driver had a fault in him.

This takes my back. I used to be on another forum and there was constant posts about how fast a mapped 335d was. It's the fastest car on the road, end of:P. Have a look at E91 Post for a laugh.

You people are SERIOUSLY misunderstanding the BMW 3.0 Twin Turbo Diesel engines, just because you think you have an AMG and over 500bhp doesnt mean anything in the real world.

Benzedup - with all due respect you beat this diesel by less than half a second, nothing to be massively proud of given your car, that could have just been down to his reaction time.

Theres nothing wrong with the C63 or its driver, like i said out in the real world things can be very different from you expected after reading the stats on the internet.

Ah but at what cost.
BMW diesel engines on average put out 9 times the EU acceptable level of poisonous chemicals. The particulate matter, which causes cancer, and nitrogen oxide and dioxide (NOx) are the real concern. Recent studies have shown that nitrogen dioxides (NO2) can cause or exacerbate a number of health conditions, such as inflammation of the lungs, which can trigger asthma and bronchitis, increased risk of heart attacks and strokes, and lower birth weight and smaller head circumference in babies. Therefore well done BMW for exceeding this level by almost 10 fold just to get performance.

(The released chemicals that damage the brain might explain their driving style too!) :ban:

Oh and for balance, the worst is AUDI who can reach 21 times the limit in certain models. Whereas Merc's top pollution is just below 4 times the acceptable level. (The only model to meet the regulations were Volvo!)

So, while this does not solve your pain about performance, it does make you now look at the BMW Diesel and think.. (I will let you decide).

Oh and I am not some eco bandit.

V8 supercharger,

Reaction time doesn't mean a slower time, you could wait for 5 mins at the start, launch the car and could still manage to get a better time than the other car, he was actually slightly ahead till about 40mph.

Anyway, my point is my little car only has 370hp or so and still managed to beat a Tuned 335D, a c63 with allot more power should easily have one especially on a long straight road.

Yeah I've read most of those whilst researching getting one :D

I came from an E60 M5 to a 2011 335d saloon and had it mapped by DMS 2 days after I picked it up. VERY fast car and it felt much faster in the real world than the M5 because of extra of torque.
The 335 was just so soulless, no noise, no smiles, no fun and on a good road would suffer from horrendous brake fade!

Thanks for the replies everyone; had a chuckle at a few.

Wish I'd bought an E63 twin-turbo now!

When some people quote how much torque a diesel has, I don't think they quite understand that rpm x torque = bhp.

There are some fantastic diesels out there, the Audi power plants the best IMO, but they're both chalk and cheese. The reliability of the IL6 diesel BMW lump isn't the best, turbos are renowned for popping, but having driven 535's and 335's it's worth risking. My friend owned a standard E60 M5 and a mapped to death 535d at the same time and the diesel 'felt' as quick as the M5 but he was always tinkering with the 535 for one reason or another.

I had a little comparrison against a e46 330d in my s211 over a 1/4 and i just pip'd him had me worried tho lmfao
