Oh no, it's another retrofit post!
Firstly, would it be possible to kindly (and politely) request that anyone that's going to post "Don't bother, it's too expensive, just buy a different car, etc, etc..." please do not bother replying to the post? Thank you.
As a technically-minded person, I know that anything "can" be done, it would end up being a question of cost, so if we can park that to one side for a moment, I'd like to know what would be needed to do this if I chose to try it.
With that out of the way, I have a W213 (registered 2020, but MY16) E400d 4matic that I "thought" had Distronic fitted (there was some misunderstanding around the terminology 'Adaptive Cruise Control') and I would like to know what I would need to do to consider retrofitting Distronic to the car and would like to hear from anyone who knows what modules/parts are needed to do this. I'm also aware that software would likely need to be updated to enable any hardware connected.
Here are a bunch of 'high level' questions I have at the moment....
1) Has anyone actually been able to do this? I saw a thread on another forum and they go so far, but ended up with issues and then selling the car anyway, so it never completed.
2) Do some cars have the Distronic controls on specific stalk and some on the steering wheel, or are they all on the specific Distronic stalk? What is the difference, just the model?
3) Other than the radar unit (which I understand goes in the front behind the logo) and the stalk/wheel with correct buttons (and related harnesses), what other hardware is required? I wonder if the car already has the radar because in the 'Assistance' menu on the dash it can 'see' other cards getting closer. My previous E350d W213 had the 'Assistance' section, but couldn't 'see' any other vehicles, so this new model must have something to detect the proximity of vehicles in front. Does anyone know a good place to get a parts list for this?
4) Is it only main dealers that can enable any software related items in the system, or can an authorised Mercedes garages do it? (and would they do it?). I ask because I know if I go to Mercedes it will be a straight 'NO'!
Would appreciate any constructive feedback, comments and answers on this.
Thanks in advance.
