Bought a 2nd hand rear alloy recently which was in a less than perfect state, so armed with Halfords 744 Brilliant Silver, Primer and Laquer 400 Wet & Dry & Megs Cutting compound I had a go and refurbing it myself. Not perfect but a great improvement:

Apologies for the phone photos, I will take better shots over the weekend.

Still managed to get paint on the tyre :wallbash:

Good job well done. :thumb: If you wanted a perfect finish, no doubt you'd take it to a professional and pay for it, though you'd lost out on the "job satisfaction" factor with that.

I've found that even if you take the tyres off and put them in a locked building a few miles away from the job, they still end up with paint on them somehow.

It'll wear off eventually though so no worries.

I've done a few sets myself now, and found that silver are the hardest to match as there are just so many different shades of the stuff. My Merc was easy as the ubiquitous satin black seems to be spot on for them, though the silver rim on the outer edge is another matter. And yes, it is paint and not diamond cut as I was initially led to believe.

I've always said that the next time I get anything which requires fettling I'll take it to a specialist, but I know I won't and I'll try it myself first. :)

Wow who'd have thought that was possible.,... very impressive!
Now fit some alloy gators to protect them from kerb rash ;p

Top job that's amazing for a home refurb you obviously have a lot more patience than me :)

I am in the process of doing a set, started last year lol and they are still stacked up in the garage!

Good job, your pics have given me some confidence

I can see some scratches around the centre at one O clock and three O clock that you've painted over, pity you didn't use a spot of filler first. Sorry.

Yep, as I said, not perfect but for £12 worth of supplies you can't complain :

Excuse my ignorance; was the sanding by hand or with a machine?

Nice one Karl. I'll drop of some wheels for you to do this weekend.

Good job there. I tried this once with an old golf mkv i had. Thankfully there are no pictures to show how bad they turned out! :)

Take your time (2x days) and a decent job can be had.

Couple more pics off my phone :)

Thats a cracking job for a diy refurb and the cost. Well done Sir!

Great job there,

I managed a similar DIY effort on diamond cut wheels (gutted by 1x small kerb mark) matching the right silver to the diamond cut on the rim took a while, but was waay cheaper than a recut n lacquer, and hid the small mark well.
