2016 W212 E-Class Saloon SE
Hi all,

I pick up my new (to me) 2016 W212 E-Class SE saloon next week.

I know it has ILS (Intelligent Light System), COMAND and the Contour Front Seat as factory options, but was wondering if there were any others I'd missed.

I've checked the VIN (WDD2120012B2202653) on multiple decoder sites, but none of them tell me what was standard vs. factory cost options.

One option code that did catch my attention was the '211A LEATHER - BLACK/ANTHRACITE'.

Anyone know if this is real leather or the standard MB-Tex / Artico material?

Good spot, I missed the 210A a few lines above.

My curiosity is being fuelled by the fact that Mercedes still often call or refer to their MB-Tex / Artico materials as 'leather'.

I also missed the 'real leather' smell during the test drive, something a lot of people say is the best way of telling.

Find a hidden piece...leather will burn, the rest will melt.

It's the dealership that 'mistakenly' call Artico leather.
The MB datacard is quite descriptive with e.g. 170A being Artificial Leather and 820A being Leather semi-aniline/nappa
I think only the 820A - nappa leather has any recognisable leather odour

:)

Think I'll wait a few weeks before setting my car on fire!

I'm new to Mercedes, is the "MB datacard" something I can access / view, or is it with the dealers only?

Ah OK, I get it.

So it seems the original owner did order the factory cost option of real leather then.

Thanks for the help.

I did some more digging, after finding the 2016 W212 brochure online, it seems leather was standard.

Correct me if I'm wrong, boys, but doesn't the reference to leather only applies to the facings?
The sides and backs of chairs won't be leather, and I'm not sure about the leather trim bits and pieces on the doors.

And isn't "nappa" leather a more genuine feeling leather than ordinary "leather?"

I'm basing these comments on the W221 (and W211) where something like the S600 has far superior leather to the S500

'Nappa' leather was a cost option on the W212 (2016 SE), the steering wheel is 'nappa'.

Mercedes aren't alone in only covering the facings in leather, if this is indeed the case.

Unless one has "Exclusive" leather option, then the dash, door cards and seat backs etc. are covered in leather not Artico/MB-Tex

It’s leather

The MB leather has never, to me, really had that 'leather' smell, unlike some older cars such as Rolls, Jaguars (MK2, older XJs etc) and Rover etc.. Nappa is better but still not really the old-school aroma. The old MB-tex was fairly good and much better, IMHO, than 'Artico'. It annoys me when dealers advertise cars as having leather when in reality it's Artico, although sometimes I'm not sure that some of the sales staff actually know which is which.

Just having leather facings us fairly standard practice, always has been except for the top end cars (ie Rolls) and even then items such as leather dashtops, leather headlining were often options. Full leather, ie all of the seat and possibly door cards etc, was often an option with different marques. Treating the leather will often ensure it remains supple and has more of an 'aroma'.

I believe yours is the genuine leather. My 1st gen CLS had that code in the datacard and was indeed leather. The W212 E350 AMG Sport I had was the half and half seats and it clearly stated imitation leather on the datacard along with an option code of 601.

At £3.99 (buy 2 get 1 free), CarPlan's 'Leather Valet' works out pretty cheap!

I've never seen one in an aerosol can before. Have you used it before? I assume it's a case of spraying it on and buffing it off?
