Hi, I just realised the MOT has expired on my car. I'm not using it and can't take it for an MOT for at least a couple of weeks. The car is taxed and insured and parked offroad but do I need to sorn it as the MOT has expired?

According to DVLA, the rules for sorn appear to be:

"You must make a SORN in any of the following situations:

  • your vehicle is not taxed
  • your vehicle is not insured (even for a short time, for example because there’s a delay renewing your policy)
  • you want to break a vehicle down for parts before you scrap it
  • you buy or receive a vehicle and want to keep it off the road (you cannot transfer a SORN from the previous keeper)"
So, my circumstances aren't covered. I've tried calling DVLA to ask, but they say they are busy and hang up.

Anyone?

Just go online and sorn it , reg number and doc Ref number , a minute does it and keeps you ok.

Rules. You need to make a SORN (Statutory Off Road Notification) when you take a vehicle 'off the road' and you want to stop taxing and insuring it. Your vehicle is off the road if you do not keep or use it on a public road, for example if it's in a garage, on a drive or on private

The OP's car is taxed and insured, so I don't believe it requires to be SORN.
It just cannot be driven on the road until it gets an MoT pass certificate. The car can only be driven to the nearest MoT test station by prior arrangement (i.e. you have a booking time and date)

In any event, you should only SORN the car if you have an off-street parking spot for it, because a SORNed car must be parked on private land (as far as I know).

Is it really nearest test station ?

No it’s not, I guess a police officer may question why you need to drive 400 miles for an MOT though, and if they find a major defect such as a damaged tyre then expect a fine… £££

Do nothing but book an mot for when you can.

No requirement as it is off-road

Thanks everyone, it's offroad, taxed and insured and not being used so I won't sorn and get it booked in to my regular place next week.

My next door neighbour had no MOT for 10 months before they noticed.
It’s surprising but so many people genuinely forget. I guess cars just aren’t their priority (unlike those of us on here!)

There's a free MOT reminder service now:

I use this for our three vehicles ... works well.

No need to sorn.

I checked when I unfortunately broke my right leg two days before my MOT appointment so my car sat on the drive for four months without an MOT but still taxed and insured.
