Car
.
Hi

I am thinking to buy a car from this dealer (Used Cars for sale in High Wycombe, Bucks | Quality Cars). He is independent and small, seems to be selling from home.

I spoke with him today in the afternoon regarding a car I found on Autotrader, which he said was sold an hour earlier. The reason I called him was because I liked the car although it is a high mileage one. This chap sounded genuine to me, but how do I know?

He said he is getting another one similar to this on Thursday. I am thinking to see the pictures of the new one and if I like the condition, I am thinking to visit him with an independent Mercedes specialist (Choose Independent Mercedes Specialist Ltd in Buckinghamshire) because I do not know much about cars, but I still need to call them and see if they will agree. I guess it should not be a problem as the distance between them is 9 miles.

Have you heard anything about these chaps before? Any advice is welcome!

Thank you very much!

It seems these are not known in our community. I will skip them then.

Thank you.

When I lived over that way - I used this guy:

Quality Used Cars For Sale In Hemel Hempstead | First Autos

Nigel... honest, reliable and friendly.

I bought two low end motors through him and they were great.

Not sure if he deals in Mercs though - which I presume is what you are after.

Or use www.mercland.com (on here) or www.adgsevenoaks.co.uk (I've used these guys before).

As for finding out if new dealers are sound, you can either go by word of mouth which you are doing, or go and meet them, have a look round the car and check it out thoroughly and get a feel for the place. You can ask questions you know the answers to see whether or not the vendor is happy to tell porkies!

I did this with ADG above, before I bought my car, which is why I am happy to recommend them now...

Any vendor you don't know - I would always get the car checked out by an inde like you suggested. ADG drove the car to my chosen inde and got it inspected for me...

Hi John

I did not expect that finding a good car on tighter budget (around £5000) can be so difficult. I am after a E220cdi, after the facelift. One part of the problem is that I do not like either the reputation of the dealer (or is unknown) or that the dealers I like do not have what I want. I am definitely trying to not be picky but cautious.

My research indicated that Mercland, MSL and WDM are trusted and regarded high. You mentioned First Autos and ADG. I checked them but they also do not have what I am looking for.

I found a facelift 2006 E280CDI, a bit more than 100,000 miles, with a beautiful interior. The car looks very clean. In fact it is very possible that I will go to see it on Saturday. The car is slightly over my budget and it is not the 220cdi. But it is coming from a place which is highly regard here.

If I am allowed to change slightly the initial question: is there a difference (significant) in terms of maintenance costs and durability between the E220cdi and 280cdi? I understand the consumption is slightly different and that the car tax is £60 darer, but this is negligible. My concern (focus) is whether the E280cdi is going to give me potentially more problems or not?

Maybe I should post a new thread to cover this topic.

Thank you!

No, the E280cdi is definitely not what I am after. An excellent car it is, but the 7g auto is troubling me. After all the difference between the E220cdi and 280CDI is 20 hp, 40 NM, and 2 cylinders, better auto in favour of 220CDI (personal opinion), less to go wrong.

I have contacted a very respected Mercedes expert and will see what will happen.

He probably buys them straight from the auctions and then adds his mark up so has no more idea about the cars he sells than if you bought from the auction direct. That way at least the money you saved could be spent on any repairs needed.

Hi Bonecho

I also think so. For this reason I spoke with somebody today in the afternoon who is in the business for more than 30 years and explained what I am after. I need peace on mind honestly. I also explained that I am not a time waster and what I am after is a mechanically sound car, do not care so much about colours or extras.

Thank you!

Most places like the ones above will try and find you a car if you provide them details of what you are looking for and your budget.

I understand your logic of less to go wrong... but you could end up with a lemon 220 too.

The 220 won't really be much different to run than a 280 in the real world.

That said, you may have less options on the 220 so in that respect, there is less to go wrong.

They don't have SBC and if you get one without airmatic, that is pretty much the cheapest spec.

On the other hand, you are going for a diesel which themselves can be troublesome...

Good luck!
