Hmm, leaded petrol smell when car being filled up and seeing the haze in the air.

Petrol: Distributors, HT leads, points, condensors, timing lights, advance mechs.

Diesel: Bosch PES pumps that never went wrong.

Working in a Austin/triumph garage remember them well.

Public phone boxes - skanky and smelling like a toilet.

Dim Christmas tree lights which didn't have blue bulbs.

TVs with the presumptuous (but not far off in terms of accuracy in the future!) 4 channels: "BBC1, BBC2, ITV1, ITV2".

Radios which had a manual dial to tune them in.

Recording the Radio 1 chart show on Sunday night with cassettes trying to avoid the DJ talking.

Home made go karts.

I once tried to ram my brother during a race. The only problem being, mine had plastic pram wheels whilst his had metal pram wheels :fail

'Fancy' cars with electric Ariels that popped up when you turned the ignition on.
:bannana:

I adored this.

As Jonsey said "Help yourself UCL on garage forecourts" brought back some memories.

Ran my 2-Stroke motorbike for years with no oil at all, just a few shots of Free UCL.

Worked fine all the time I had it.....wonder if it still exists (not likely, this was 1970)..

I saw someone write a cheque yesterday - how fascinating and quaint.

On that note remember those credit card contraptions they used to have in stores. Place card in, invoice over the top and quick swipe right & left over the tops of card.

Yes, and I also remember how thieves used to collect the discarded carbon paper from stores' bins and copy the credit card details...

Looked at the first few pages of this thread and remember most of the stuff - must be old. :( [I have the first and last copy of "Today". Also got the first "Independent" somewhere.]

I was at a Premier Inn the other week when their system crashed totally - they were uncuccessfully trying to work out how to use one of these as a backup..

I'm old enough to remember when there was no such thing as credit cards in the UK.

As for cheques, my wife accepts them as payment for her hairdressing because she doesn't have enough business to justify the merchant charges. About 20 of her clients always pay by cheque. Not quaint, realistic.
