yestarday my fuel gauge decided to start playing up, one min reading ok next zero for a while and then where ever it wants. could this be a fuel sender problem?

i'm using super unleaded in the car, it was weird the way it just started for no reason other than i was speeding up a hill at the time and used my kick down. a few mins later gauge all over the place.
