Your driving on to a motorway, someone with a faster car blasts past or tail gates you, you catch up in a little bit and the stupid idiot sits in the fast lane at around 75 MPH and just wont get out the way and he/she continues to drive level with the middle lane driver with a whole road ahead. Who find that as annoying as me , gets me to the point where I feel like running them off the road, or just accelrating up their a**

No, I much more find it annoying when I overtake a slower moving car, that then because they have been overtaken speeds up.

In those cases, if then tailgated I do occassionaly slow down to their original speed.

no such thing as the "fast lane" or at least there wasn't when I last looked at the highway code

"at around 75 MPH and just wont get out the way and he/she continues to drive level with the middle lane driver with a whole road ahead"

That's because he/she is sticking to the speed limit whilst attempting to overtake which is something that does get a mention in the highway code - 70mph I think is the figure mentioned :)

What really hacks me off is people who tailgate and flash me whilst I'm in the outside lane overtaking cars in the middle lane just because they are moving a bit faster and think they have some divine right to that lane

Yeah and I believe the highway code also says if someone is tailgating you not to sit in their way to slow them down because it's not up to you to inforce the law on them. Plus who gives a flying f**k what the sh**y highway code. Highway code fountain of all cr**, how to drive like a complete knob. Who really gives a sh** about the speed limit some do gooder that wants to seem all i'm Mr butter wouldn't melt in my mouth.

I rememeber the good old days driving through france, someone would come up in a car and just b;asted up your a** till you pulled over, unfortuntly its ruined when I go now because they clamped down. This countries got to many idiots that think it's clever to slow down when someones up their a**, like it makes them some kind of interlect but it doesn't just makes them the type person you feel like jumping up and down on there car at the traffic lights!

What is that all about???
You seem to be very agitated and appear to have little regard for sensible driving or the law. Remind me to keep off the road when you are on it.

We all like a bit of quick driving but obey the limit most of the time and NEVER feel like jumping on someones car!!!!!!!!

Oh come on most people on this forum i'm sure dont obey the speed limit most the time. I.m sure most people here have wanted to get ou and amash someone car up because they have got them going that bad when there driving on the road. Just people dont want to admit to how they feel!

interesting response,

well, i don't know what the highway code has to say about tailgating, all I can recall is it tells you to leave safe distances between you and the car in front. (rules 105 and 210)

it suggests that you are considerate to other road users (rule 125)

it refers to the speed limit (rule 235)

it mentions how to overtake (rules 238, 241 and others)

I too remember the good old days of driving through France, I remember that France had just about the highest number of road deaths every year and that was why they started clamping down - but then again who gives a damn about that because they are "other people". I can remember when there were no speed limits of the M1 and i can remember the carnage when cars just piled into each other when idioyts were tailgating each other in adverse weather conditions

Do we need a highway code or laws to govern the way we drive? Sadly we do and even more sadly we are expected to stick to the laws.

You are in charge of a very dangerous weapon, if you cannot control your anger....take the bus!

I'm sure being "considerate" should include letting a faster vehicle past. Just because I drive at the speed limit doesn't mean that I should enforce it somehow, I'm not a police officer and my speedo isn't calibrated so perfectly that I can say for definite how fast another car is going. If I'm overtaking a bunch of cars on the motorway and I see something approaching in the RVM, I find a gap to slot into and let them past, I see no reason why I should make them slow down.

When joining the motorway I usually set the cruise and then maintain the same speed, just moving the car in and out of lanes to overtake. I find it amusing when I seem to overtake some cars several times because of hills or the other drivers being distracted by something, with the cruise control set my speed never changes (just don't accidently play some whalesong or other relaxation CD or you'll fall asleep in no time! ;) )

There we go that sounds more like it. Decent driving not trying to be petty like a little kid crying because someone wants to overtake. Your driving seems the type that suits everyone you pass others they pass you no problems! ;)

I totally agree with you shude, but I'm not going to bust my gut to overtake someone just because I've got an idiot tailgating me :)

I was driving around the M25 recently doing 70(ish:)) overtaking an almost solid row of traffic in the middle lane when all of a sudden I find an idiot in a 3 series BM on my back bumper flashing and gesturing for me to pull over so he can get by - no I didn't move over as there wasn't room to so he forced his way across to the hard shoulder, overtook about 15 cars there then cut out across all 3 lanes to get back into his "rightful position" - 20 miles down the motorway we saw the same car, on the hard shoulder again talking to a very nice man in a uniform driving an unmarked dark blue Volvo :)

You never know who is watching you.

Sure, sometimes I get hacked off with other drivers but I have NEVER felt like getting out and jumping on their cars :)

If I were to stereotype ,

I'd say that was the Volvo driver who sits in the middle lane doing 70 ;)

and you are actually a BMW driver trapped in a Mercedes body  :)

never tailgate

I was not tailgateing just over taking from middle lane to outside lane to overtake a car and look what happen read thread below70 is still to fast for some cars and they should be rateted with a speed limit when on mot ie 56, 60, 65, 70,unless they can prove that tyres are correctly rated and the car and driver is safe at speed

Driving down to the sister in laws one sunny afternoon m6 south bound traffic mediun flowing ok doing about 70/80 middle lane, me, my son, my mother in law, my wife, all enjoying the trip,
It passed me at about 100mph light blue b reg nissin cherry, it was about 50mts infront of me when i pulled out to overtake a car, somthing hit the winscreen and again and again, blue smoke billowing from the front of the nissan and his rear tyre hitting my winscreen, he began to spin!!! and 360 twice in the outside lane blue smoke pouring out from his front tyres and the look of horror on his and his passengers faces as he griped the steering wheel and his head was hitting the roof as he pressed the brake peddle. spinning all the way to the hard shoulder ending up the facing the right way on the hard shoulder we said nothing for 1hour till we got to the sister inlaws where we all had a brandy and a very sleepless night, it all took about 10 sec but all in slow motion. by the way i floored it passed him and did'nt stop

more importantly 70 is too fast for some drivers.

That is sooo true - every know and again I like to have a blast but not bully anyone on the road or endanger them or myself.

Was doing high speed on the M40 (a stretch where I know there are no cameras one noon but was “paranoid” that every car I was passing might have been an unmarked police car. Had a few cars who tried to keep up/tailgate the S500 I was driving at the time (and the thought did cross my mind if any of them may have possibly have been an unmarked police car) but I just floored it and they backed off. They must have thought that it was just a humble S280 as it was debadged at first.

Ohhh and the amount of dead flies/insects that were on front of the car was just awful an had to be washed off immediately when got car back home.

Driving on the motorways can be a frustrating experience...

On the subject of tailgating - it is one of the worst crimes in my book - but what is the correct etiquette required to get past someone when there is no other way? If you hang back at the same speed, they won't realise you want to press on.
Definitely out is closing in on them at supersonic speed and braking / flashing lights at the last moment. Perhaps closing slowly just as you both are coming up to a free 'space' in the middle lane would provide a handy 'hint'?
If someone taligates me, my usual response is to either find a safer space in the middle lane (which may involve a temporary boost in speed) or slow down until they get the hint and back off. Though I do admit that the more agressive they are the more likely I am to slow down.

I found that Germans perform this task perfectly, they basically turn their headlamps on to full, and grip the rear bumper of the car in front, while indicating to overtake (although there is no lane). That seems to work well for them! ;)

I do have a german surname, so obviously will have to practice my technique!
Having driven in Russia, I can add that the Russians are good at this too, but they tend to substitute the horn for the indicator...
