As per the title ...

I have been given a little boat , its a sailing boat , but the mast has been lost somewhere. It was in a terrible state when i got it , and i have been cleaning it up . Just the varnish work to do now.

My plan is to use it as a day boat on the river , as it has no mast . However i don't have an outboard and sourcing one for sensible money is proving difficult.

So , does anyone have a 4 or 5 hp ( longshaft ideally ) outboard that they want to part with for sensible money. Any of the big names will do ( Yamaha , Mariner , Mercury , Suzuki ) , but must be no more than 20 ( ish )years old and reliable ( i work on a lock and see too many people that need towing out of the lock when they go to start their outboard and it just won't start again ) ...

Thanks in advance everyone.

Here she is after a good wash ...

You jammy bu66er. You've been given a boat - a modest one yes but nonetheless, a boat all the same. Grrrrrrr :wallbash:

Seriously though, if you're just going up and down the river, you don't need a mast, sails etc just a reliable outboard.

Is there an outboard bracket on the transom? My RIB experience is with Yamaha as I find that they are reliable but it all depends on how an engine has been treated/serviced etc.

Good Luck with it.

It does have an outboard bracket .

I've been on boats all my life , we own a few marinas on the Thames ( www.teddingtonharbouryachtclub.co.uk - THYC ) and i am a lock keeper but cannot find an outboard for love nor money !!

Sailing doesn't really appeal to me sadly , i find it a bit boring. :o

Don't like British Seagull really , noisy and outdated. Had a few Mariners etc in the past and know that they are reliable and easy to deal with.

Many thanks so far.

We have an ancient Seagull and a 20hp Mercury Outboard, both laid up in my Dad's garage up north - I'll ask him if he wants to get rid? He might f

Neither have been used for 15 years or so but at least the Seagull should be easy to recommission.

Ade

Just reread both engines are probably over 20 years old and one is a Seagull..:o

Thanks Ade.

We have a couple of seagulls in the shop , that i will fall back on if all else fails , but because it is going to be used to power the boat pretty much constantly ( no mast or sails ) i would rather have an engine from the Japanese market as they are more suited to constant use than the Seagull.

Thank you anyway.

Had a look , nothing local .... :(

I'm off to Devon in a couple of weeks time, find something down on the South coast and I will happily bring it back up for you.

im having the same problem, but i need a short shaft. I bought this for 99p on ebay and have been fixing it up. I have been given a 20hp mariner to test/get going but its a long shaft. Maybe if you find a good short shaft we could swap?

I think 20 hp would be too big .

4 or 5 is about the max that the bracket would take on mine .

I can't beleive that you won that for 99p  brilliant !

1st one was on watch anyway ;)

The next two are too small , and i have an irrational dislike of Evinrudes ( bad experiences when i was younger )

Thanks for looking , something will turn up !!

That first one looks good actually
