Does anyone here know about 1980's Maserati's?

And in particular, the mid-1980's 425 V6 Bi-Turbo model?

Going to have a look at one tomorrow, I've done a fair bit of research into them already and just wondered if anyone on here had any knowledge on them, thanks.

............... what's the worse that can happen?

This, for example?

bi turbo 80's maserati.... oooooo i can think of too many reason not to buy it. Main one being it's almost as ugly as a lada.... However, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

It does look like it could be a fair bit of trouble

iirc, they aren't that fast, are they?

Wiki quote..

"The Biturbo is number 28 in the BBC book of "Crap Cars" and in 2007 was selected as Time Magazine's worst car of 1984, although they ranked the Chrysler TC by Maserati as a "greater ignominy".[2]"

Just to balance it, a friend who is a classic car broker, and has himself owned numerous fast cars, including 4 Ferraris, said he recently was shown a Biturbo, his initial reaction was as many of the above, but driving it he thoroughly enjoyed himself and thought it much maligned for no good reason.

Anyway, all I know about Lee is that he'll make his own mind up, and it wouldn't surprise me if it's being trailered over already!

Lee

The team who designed that thing went onto work on projects for large cardboard box manufacturers. It really is an ugly duckling.

As others have said IIRC they were a big heap trouble when new and carried on in a similar vain.

An Italian friend of mine bought one of these new, not quite sure why.

Performance
0-60mph:7.2secs
Top speed:126mph
Power:192bhp
Torque:220lb/ft
MPG:22mpg

Probably worth a grand if you have the inclination.

Not exactly awe-inspiring figures today, but comparable to an E30 325i which was the yuppie's choice of compact sports saloon at the time. Or you could have had your hot hatch Escort RS Turbo, probably both were much cheaper than the Mazza.

I still see the occasional E30 BMW, but it's been years since I saw an RS Turbo or a Biturbo. Actually, the last time I saw a Biturbo I followed it for about a mile and when I got back to work I commented to my colleagues about the fact that it hadn't broken down..

I dare say a grand will bag it if you haggle, and let's face it there's bragging rights down the pub if you say you've got a Maserati. What's the worst that can happen? I suppose you've just thrown a grand away.

Cheers,

Gaz

Or put another way.

I would rather be caught climbing out the back end of a sheep than be caught getting out of that.

At that price, if it puts a smile on your face and you get a summers fun out of it then go for it. A friends dad had one and as a kid I always remember the interior being a wonder of leather.

Always had a soft spot for a ghibli cup from that era

Due to the amount of conjecture, can I assume that no-one knows a great deal about the first Bi-turbo engined production car then other than they are slightly *cough* unreliable and they're not the best of lookers?

You could achieve the same effect by withdrawing the cash in £5 notes and periodically having a small bonfire in your garden with them over say a year. Get your wife to saturate your favourite jeans in used engine oil or better still brake fluid and then go down your local and buy all the guys at your local body shop drinks for the entire night. ;)

Actually my specialist subject Massers and Ferraris from 1975 - 1995 ask away we actually had the very car you are looking at for a whole 2 weeks personally I think I was lucky to sell it the price of parts for these makes a ferrari look cheap but please feel free to post pm or e msil me if you neef info I got trade contacts for these but not a car I would go near again
