Today I have heard that there is a group targeting cars with sat navs and valuable item left inside a car.

I have been told that they use some device linked to a laptop that will open your vehicle and disable your factory alarm from a short distance.

Has anyone heard about this? I have been warned today not to keep any valuable items in the car. Not sure what type of cars they are targeting.

I guess it's possible with a rolling code RF scanner device.

Not leaving stuff in the car seems like a good idea anyway.

Sounds like a cross between a couple of urban myths.

Old fashioned alarms without rolling frequencies that could be sniffed and promptly replicated.

People leaving Bluetooth bluetooth GPS receivers running whilst hidden in gloveboxes sending signals picked up by hoodie wearing scrote on his mobile phone.

Said hoodie still does this with wifi enabled phone... looking for laptops not shut down properly (lid closed, not suspended or shut down & broadcasting wifi) and carefully placed in car boot. This enables scrote to drive around all the town car parks and tarhet mr sales guy's car with absolute ease.

I carry an an A-Z and leave it where it can be clearly seen in the hope that the scrotes will figure I mustn't therefore have a sat nav.

Also after using the tomtom I wipe the windscreen where the suction pad has been just to deter the better educated scumbags who look for evidence on the windscreen.

A bluetooth emitting black widow or hand grenade would be useful.

Why wouldn't they just smash the window and be off?

Technology wouldn't make their job easier. Just because there's a new way of doing something, doens't mean it's the best way.

Rumour about scrotes nicking GPS then pushing 'home' button and hotfooting it there and breaking in while you're still telling the polis your GPS has been nicked.

.

my GPS has a bean bag stand for the dash, so no sticky bits on the window.

And I don't have blue tooth anything, so i guess they are not going to be finding much in the clatterwagon.

Hi Scumbag I have been looking for one of these but so far have been unable to find one where did you get yours from? Thanks :)

it came with the car kit with the GPS.

Its a GARMIN 76 something or other.

this is the same thing, but mine uses a different GPS holder on the mounting. You buy the bits you need for which ever unit you have. (I have a handlebar holder for the bike too)

It will stay in place for most driving, but really hard acceleration can having it slide off the dash. My dash is on a slope as it is and the GPS unit is quite tall, so a lower one would go further away to the screen and stand a better chance of grip under hard acceleration.

I have only had it escape on me once. normally I don't hammer it from a standstill.

That's why its best to have your home location set a block or two away from your actual home address....

It all makes me glad I have a Tracker in my car. With a GPS they know where they are but also so do the police! :)

This bit I cannot understand, unless you live in the sticks where your house almost has a unique postcode. My postcode covers about 15 or so houses, or my street address has about 200 houses in it. Why would having your address in the sat nav send people to your home?

I bought a generic GPS beanbag mount as a Christmas prezzie for my Dad from Lakeland. It has a plain flat disc in the middle of it so that a windscreen suction mount goes straight on to it. Cost about £20 from memory, but I can't seem to find it on their website

My mate bought an E300TD Estate with no Sat-Nav.
But - The previous owner had one and had left the bracket in place.
A baaaaaaaaaaad mistake !!
Predictably, the local riff-raff smashed the N/S front window, opened the glove compartment, found nothing - - - But pinched the bracket out of spite, for good measure.

Sounds obvious - But don't leave the bracket in place, as they assume the SN will be in the glove compartment.

Because when you program it in it asks for your house number

Best way is to set the home location as your local police station :D

Cheap as chips :bannana::bannana::bannana:

Can never understand why people stick sat navs on windscreen - it a) looks naff b) blocks your vision and worse of all why do so many people leave their Tom Toms or whatever on daylight mode at night ....must be like having a torch shining in your eyes...

If they are to be on the screen then bottom right hand corner - but I have seen them just under the rear view mirror..
