It spans the new A590 bypass near High Newton in the South Lakes, I've seen one in Wales and another in North Cumbria too. It doesn't appear to carry power lines or telecoms....:dk:

It looks like the traps they put in under power lines, but none are visible. Is a new power line about to be put in? Somehow it doesn't look new though.

Its one of those new adventure activities for kids who throw lumps of brick off overhead walkways on to unsuspecting drivers!

It looks like a safety net for overhead lines due to be erected . The power companies often erect similar structures when repairing or replacing overhead lines .

Nice answers chaps...particularly renault12ts and EDZ649, I like that a lot!:D
The structure is brand spanking new and permanent, its not a power line safety net although I can see where this idea comes from. The lines span the carriageway between two pairs of stout timber poles such as those used for overhead LV supply but there are no electricity cables just wires with balls on them. The cables you see are simply permanently anchored into concrete retainers behind each pair of posts.

It's a bat guide. They install them on new roads where they transect hedge rows or lines of trees so that bats can continue to hunt and find their way around without losing their way.

Strange but true!

Smatt and I were getting close then. :D

Actually they did have to relocate a colony of bats during construction so this would make perfect sense! Thankyou, I can now sleep at night:bannana:

There are a couple in North Cumbria on the new roads into Workington and Whitehaven. Bothered me for ages too!

It did baffle me the first time I drove under it on the 590. I was told it was something to do with bats when I enquired. Never bothered me and I still haven't seen any bats around there whatever time of the day I drive past.

Mind, you sometimes get this creepy eerie feeling............ .

You don't see any bats as they will have all crossed safely as opposed to flying around the gap confusedly.

Simples!

Sorry, but you are all wrong.

It's a giant clothes line.

Here's a photo of the pegs......
