Evening all

I hope you are all keeping safe and well

so I dropped the ML in for its annual service last week and when I picked it up they advised me that I have an oil leak on the inter cooler
No problem I thought just give me an idea how much to sort it
Over a grand I was told and that’s at an independent not main dealer

so is there a way to sort this without chucking over a grand at it

It might not need to cost that much

Cheapest option........Salvage & d.i.y

Middle ground....Decent aftermarket & decent local garage or indy.

Not an expert on intercoolers & don't know your budget or garage options.

Good luck !

Do they mean oil leak on the oil cooler seals rather than the intercooler?

I assume so but they have told me the job is mainly labour
roughly 35 to 40 hours hence the big money

Sadly I haven't got the knowledge, room or the health to tackle something like this

In 35 -40 hours they could take the engine out, take it to pieces, put it back together & put it back in!

Second opinion needed here IMO.

Whereabouts are you?

The oil cooler seals on the om642 is 8 hours ish apparently (not sure which engine you have ) . Are they an MB independent specialist ?

Crikey, let's hope they are wrong, 40 hours labour is £2.8k plus VAT even at an indy

Theyre taking you for a ride, find a new garage ASAP and ask them to gently fist themselves for 35-40 hours.

Most likely the seal to the Oil cooler in the "V".

It's 99% labour, if you don't fancy getting yourself greasy, shop around. Or.........put in a few more hours at work and pay what he quoted...

This has to be a misunderstanding........otherwise the hours mentioned are BS.

My work colleague had the same issue on his S Class. A £10 Seal. MB dealer was just under £2000. He got it done at a local Independent for about £1,400.

To be honest I didn’t think my independent was trying to fleece me
Just annoying that something so small costs so much but I suppose that’s Mercedes

Did you not Know you had a leak, is it just a weeping seal or are you losing oil on your drive ?

You are missing the point,,,,,,,,,,,,35-40 hours is nonsense.

40 hrs @ £50 an hour is £2k plus parts (you will struggle to get a decent mechanic for much less that that rate...especially if including vat),

In absence of seeing a data edited price breakdown quote something is not right here.

As others have said.. second opinion on anything above a £1k repair imho.

There isint supposed to be any oil in an intercooler, if its leaking from that 2 things 1 it has to be coming from somewhere else, most likely candidate your turbo and 2 there has to be a hole in it for it to leak out of, so.............

I had noticed a patch forming and if i remember correctly it was noted on the last MOT
obviously small drips soon become an oil patch on the drive

Anyone got any suggestions for a decent independent around Stoke-on-Trent ????????
