They have chains, and contrary to popular belief, they do occasionally break, which in most cases means the (interference) engine is destroyed. 
So, follow maintenance schedules and whenever chain rattle is diagnosed, get it addressed by someone who knows what they are doing.
The chain went on my previous s-class at less than 100K miles and having been properly maintained regardless of expenses, and I had to write off the car.
