How much should this repair cost? So, it's come to get some repairs done on my E Class, E220 2014 Cabriolet AMG LINE Bluetec.

Ive noticed a rattle when the car starts, so that's the timing chain. I recently have a small crack on one of the rear springs on the drivers side so the car is dropped by an inch. This is what I was quoted by an independent mecerdes garage. It seems really steep to me for some of the work, considering I get V8's in classics, overhaul ect for much much less. I didn't want to keep the car for more than 2-3 years, its ULEZ compliant but I'll be needing something bigger soon. Am I getting ripped off or what?

1. Center Compartment - £154 (Car broken into, tramp broke the center console trying to get into it on one side of the lid.
2. Licence Plate Lamp - £49
3.A/C regas - £90
4. Brake Fluid Change - £80
5. Full Service B - £498 (I was told this includes timing chain but can't find anything online that references timing chain)
6. water pump, thermostat, coolant outlet - £688
7. 2x Front Suspension Arm - £563
8. 2x Rear Co Springs - £473

Total approx £5522 including all repairs/labour

That only comes to £3631? I presume the other £2k is for the timing chain?

What’s the mileage out of interest?

...5. Full Service B - £498 (I was told this includes timing chain but can't find anything online that references timing chain)...

Service B does not include timing chain. The price you quoted - £498 - is about right for a Service B from a main dealer, though its a bit high coming from an indie.

A timing chain won't be included in a B service, so what are they proposing to do about the timing chain? Presumably replace something; if so, what?

I can't see how the items on the list could all be for parts; a number plate bulb doesn't cost £50, for a start. And if item 7 and 8 are total cost, rather than each, then the cost is about £2.5k.

The car's probably worth about £10-12K, depending on the mileage, if eBay is any guide, but that is quite a lot to spend on sorting it. Who says the front arms need doing; the indie, or the MoT tester? Is the car losing coolant, and if so, is it from the water pump? Does it fail to reach running temperature? If not, it doesn't need a new thermostat.

If he's in reach, Terry Gates in north Harrow would be my go-to; there are good indies and not-so-good indies, and he's excellent.

Whereabouts in London are you based? There are bound to be some members who can recommend a good indie in any given area.

If you are in West or North London, talk to Terry at Wayne Gates in Harrow:

Highly recommended.
He's still around? I should contact him he's got a good rep in NW london. Yeah i'm between west and north west LDN
I messaged them back about the Service B 'including timing chain' challenged them on it tonight and he said I was right, Service B doesn't include the chain since there's no set time when it can go bad.

If they are doing the chain, why didn't they quote or potentially tell me that splines may need to be replaced if theres wear?

They said they'll get back to me about the chain. I've been told by 2 sources taking the engine out and dropping the tranny is like 2K minimum..
Service B sounds like a joke. I change my oil and filters at MOT every year anyway.

I have drivers side rear wheel arch sagging and they said theres also a hairline crack on the otherside.

Front arms they said theres a tiny bit of play, it only moved like 1mm at best when pulling on both arms..

I noticed the engine isnt running at 80'c (middle of the temp gauge), theres a coolant leak coming out of the pump also.

1mm movement is bugger-all; I can't help wondering if they're trying to rip you off there at least.

There was a lot of light hearted banter about how expensive mercs are and how people don't want to pay for the experience yada yada ...

I have a 4 digit plate on the car, the car is detailed/ceramic coated, full tints, which doesn't help me look like a porper.

They are, but there are also rip-off types around who will try to take advantage of that...

You need to take it elsewhere for second opinions and quotes. Don’t mention the first garage at all, ie no back story.

You need to ask all garages for a full breakdown of the costs, having to assume what £2k of a £5k bill is not good enough.

You could book a visual health check with a main dealer,!2£8,£ is similarly free as it allows them to quote for work.

That would give you a second opinion on what’s wrong with it, and provide an indication of the upper limits on costs.

Also when a garage tells you it’s a B service, ask them to specify which additional items are included based on age/mileage.

Almost every service has one or more additional item, so excluding those can allow them to inflate the price for less work.

Good luck getting sorted.

Put your details into the Mercedes online quite tool, and it will tell you which additional service items are due and how much they cost.

It won’t tell you about repair costs nor additional items which were due in previous years and mileages but which were skipped.

Armed with this information you can check what you’re being told by Mercedes specialists and other independent garages.
