Does your 211 heater do this?

I am checking before taking it to the dealer. Is this normal behaviour?

On damp mornings, or hot afternoons, or any other "extreme" of climate, when I start the car after a long period stationary, the Climate Control starts up (it is permanently left in "Auto" with A/C on) without problem.

However, it only runs for a few seconds - maybe 10 -20 seconds - and then shuts down completely, there is no fan operation at all. It stays like this for up to 2-3 minutes; it makes no difference if I switch to manual fan speed control and turn that to max, the fan is completely switched off.

After the 2-3 minutes, the Climate Control suddenly springs to life, the fan starts up and all is well until the next time.

This happens very often.

My last BMW would control fan speed after switch-on to allow the A/C to fully chill or to allow the engine to warm up before really "getting going" but it never shut the fan down completely and the manual control always allowed e to override the default setting.

I find this quite dangerous, I had to drive for several minutes this morning, fighting off condensation with absolutely no ability to direct air onto the screen at all.

Does anyone else experience this?

Thanks
Phliip

Experienced nothing like that. "Auto" lost the plot once in extreme cold and some new control bits needed but the manual function was still there

When it is in Auto, even if you play with the temperature dials, it atkes a short time to build up heat or cool down enough air before suddenly going into action full belt. It varies from a few seconds to a minute or so on mine depending on conditions.
Press one of the fan switches to regain manual control.

Thanks for the replies. The behaviour you describe is as I would expect in Auto. But when I use the manual fan override nothing happens - I can have the fan set to max (6 red lights) and there is no fan actuation at all. I can leave it in manual with the fan set to full for a couple of minutes before the fan will respond.
