Don't argue with the Americans

There is something unsettling about an entire race/country that has to be, psychologically at least, the biggest and the best at everything. A worrying trait when the net result are these behemoths. Or are they really the saviours of mankind?

Go live in the third world for a year non stop, then tell me.... :):)

I feel very fortunate indeed that it is the five eyes calling the shots and not the Chinese or Russians for example.

Of course a lot of countries have no air force at all.

I remember the aircraft assembled for the film "Battle of Britain" (which I watched on TV last night ;)) became the 35th largest air force at that time.

You need to read this book by Tom Wolfe [ Forget the film! its the Hollywood version:crazy: ] Its not for nothing many of the US astronauts were ex Navy Pilots!

'One US aircraft carrier has a more powerful air force than 70% of all countries'

Or, you could say...:

'Worryingly, 70% of all countries' air forces are less powerful than a single aircraft carrier'

The US have 10 of these Nimitz class carriers and at least another 10 of different classes of carriers.
The size of these carriers is truly awe inspiring, when on exercise with the RN they have to slow down to let ours and their Frigates and Destroyers catch up, their actual top speed is rumoured to be 45-50 knots, but I personally believe this to be BS.

That sounds like an advertising campaign!

Interesting comment.

That is a good description of what used to be the British Empire....

That carrier will never do 50 knots. You'd need a planing hull to do that.

One of the most closely guarded secrets in the Navy is the true top speed of ships.

You can water-ski behind our Frigates.

There's some doubt about the way this is measured, but it's regularly claimed that Disney has the 5th largest navy in the world.

^ Just realised; there are American sailors who walk around with Ponce on their hats. LaughingMAO at the visual imagery, standing to attention, erect, saluting.
(PS My brain knows Ponce was an early Spanish explorer but the inner child isn't listening)

Back in 1978 I was backpacking across the States and made the mistake of asking for 20 fags.:eek:

I once wrote up my meal at St Johns of faggot followed by woodcock (I forget the wines) on a US wine website. It got reported to the moderator who knew me well enough to know I'd never do smutty innuendo, no way.

Really? Take a look at this link speed is shown clearly on the T23 Frigate, http://www.royalnavy.mod.uk/the-equipment/ships/frigates/type-23-frigate
The top speed of our frigates is not all that at 28knots, slow, compared to a lot of modern Naval Warships, and as I said the American carriers and most of their escorts have to slow down to let our frigates and our previous t42 destroyers to catch up when on exercise, I can tell you at 28-30 knots on a T42 destroyer you know your doing it not exactly the best experience I have had. As far as water-skiing off the back, I certainly wouldn't like to do it with the amount of prop turbulence of two contra rotating variable pitch props spinning flat out driven by two Concorde and two jet airliner engines (do sound awesome though).
