As some of you might have read bought a 2003 CLK 270 CDI about a month ago. Well to cut a long story short the engine is knocking/clattering the Merc specialist who sorted out my fan problem (swirl flap motor U/S ) said it could be small ends or camshaft.
From what ive been told it will cost as much as a replacement engine to investigate mine. But the thing is im no expert but i cant see that my engine can be really bad as it is responsive on the throttle does not smoke use any oil good mpg it just makes a racket Im really at a loss as i really like the car but the noise is a bit too much and id like to sort it out but dont know what to do.

Why don’t you record the sound and upload it here, so we all can hear it and maybe someone will have an idea what’s happening inside your engine. Other option is to look for second opinion from other Mercedes specialist.

Yes take it to another Indy.
The timing could be out a few degrees, worn chain, that makes diesels noisy.

Ive tried uploaded a vid and recording of the noise but i keep getting either file too large or wrong extension ?

How large is the file ?

Hopefully someone might know what the noise is youtube link. The noise is far more rattell sounding when accelerating hard.

Hi.

You say you bought it about a month ago - I hope it didn't sound like that on the road test? Was it a private or trade buy? You are aware that no matter what the Dealer says they are obliged to repair or optionally refund the full price within a 3 month period. There is no way around it I'm afraid unless it is a true "Trade to Trade" Sale. Private Sale, no recourse at all I'm afraid. But it does sound pretty rough!

Have you done an oil change etc? Or checked if there is oil in it? You'd be surprised how soon a diesel is buggered up by infrequent oil changes! Also to me that engine sounds pretty laboured.

Look, I'm no diesel specialist, but even I would be worried...... Sorry. :(

It was bought private the thing is apart from the racket the engine performs wonderful very responsive no smoke not using oil good mpg.

Was it making that noise when you bought it??

Yes i think i must have been deaf. Merc specialist who did a bit of work and got it moted knew the car said the previous owner had been driving like that for a few months. he said it could either be a small end or the cam id have thought if it was a small end the car would not perform as well as it does ?.

Who is the Merc specialist who you refer to (so locals can suggest another)
Did he put it on STAR?
Will he tell you the fault codes?
Does it vary on revs?
When engine warm does it vary?
It's not just diesel clatter is it (just askin'....)

The specialist did sort out the fan running problem i had (swirl flap motor gone U/S put a emulator on)
Not been put on star
it does vary with revs gets more higher pitched rattlely not so knocky
it seems louder when warm also noticed on lifting of the throttle almost dissapears.

I remember an old Chinese Proverb: "A Candle Always Burns Brightest at its End, Grasshopper"....
