A Tyre on my ML went low in pressure and I pumped it but two days later flat as a pancake.

Obvious puncture so took the wheel off and took it to Kwik S@"T who told me it couldnt be repaired as a screw on top of the tread was at an angle and the plug and patch would not hold. "I can get a quote for a new Tyre" which i said no and told him "I am so unlucky as the three punctures I have had over a few years all needed new tyres when taken there" and I was sure he was taking the piss.

i Took it to a local company who pulled the screw out and said this has not even gone through the inside. He then found the real hole and plugged it for a tenner.

Bit of difference a tenner or £235 for a tyre.

There is an old addage which has proven correct throughout my life, "it is not what you know but who you know that counts" reliable supplier/contacts worth looking after!

In a similar vein, some years back my lad took his MR2 to a local tyre company for 2 new front tyres. Nice sunny day so he waited outside for the job to be done. He was approached by the manager who told him that his front discs and pads were in need of replacement and they could get the parts and deal while he waited. "Funny that" he replied, I only changed them last Saturday" The manager blushed and sloped away. Needless to say......

Hmmm
Some years ago i worked in a well known dealership on the service desk, it was a fill in job whilst i waited for something else to happen, as a service advisor it was my job to phone customers and advise them what needed doing to their cars, i left because i could not put up with the deceit people were being told, and it was normally pads and disc's, which were fine for thousands of miles being changed at a high cost.
I also saw one "bloke" advise an elderly customer he needed four new tyres, when they were fitted the "bloke" put the old tyres in his car as they were in good shape and would do his girlfriends car.

I will not mention the dealership, but i know it goes on.

ooo kwik fit stories !

Had a slow leak when I had a ford to it next door to kwik fit and was advised I need a new alloy ! so I said leave it and run it down to Nick's Tyres who have always been good to me within seconds the guy said they're talking Sh*t popped the tyre off cleaned the rim up bead seal and tyre back on Job done .... £10.

To be fair to KwikFit staff... and any other chain - they are trained as to what they are allowed to do and what they are not allowed to do.

The consideration for the chain management may be safety related, erring on the side of caution for insurance and liability reasons etc.

Or it could be a commercial issue - it might not be commercially viable for them to deal with anything other than a very straightforward puncture repair.

So you will ofetn find that a back-street tyre fitter will repair a puncture that a chain-owned shop won't.

It's no different to an indie willing to repair a component that a main dealer will only replace with new.

You may have very well done the right thing by using an independent tyre-fitter as opposed to the chain shop - but my point is that just because this was the right solution for you, it does not necessarily means that the fitters at KwikFit did anything wrong.

Too kind by far MJ. I suspect an aggressive selling regime devised by a strata of spineless middle management too lame to tell their superiors their 'target' culture sucks. Like you though, I don't blame the fitters for doing what they are told to do with SFA in the way of autonomy.

Get in touch with these guys gem tech romford - Google Search
They are looking after my car.

We're quite lucky where I am in that I'm close to a good Kwik Fit with guys into their cars who are happy to do whatever they can to help with reseals etc and they've never tried to upsell me (yet). Like anywhere you get the good and the bad guys.

I won't name it though in case they get a bollocking for being too helpful!

Best to stick to a thread specific to your problem rather than tacking it to an existing and non related thread. You may get more replies.
